pitft 3.5 inch with retropie 2.6

hey everyone. i'm beginning a mobile raspberry pi portable project, however i'm having a bit of difficulty setting up the tft screen. it works fine with the custom os provided by adafruit, however i can't get it working on retropie. i followed the guide here: https://learn.adafruit.com/running-opengl-based-games-and-emulators-on-adafruit-pitft-displays/retropie-setup

i noticed in the guide it says the project isn't recommended for the 3.5 inch screen but doesn't really explain why or if it even works at all. is there anyone here who can shed some light on this?

i should probably mention that even after following the guide exactly, i still get a white screen on the tft.

https://learn.adafruit.com/running-opengl-based-games-and-emulators-on-adafruit-pitft-displays/pitft-setup I see too many do this and no why. My guess is the driver code is written very specific to 2.8 inch TFT. If you can recode it, it may work on 3.5 TFT. are you up for this task?

I read more thoroughly and supposedly it's because the bigger screen will have a lower refresh rate. So my guess is they didn't even bother changing the drivers to work with retropie. I've never written any drivers before, but I've got all summer and seems like a cool thing to learn so maybe I'll try it out.
