Raspberry PI or other small computer as a telephone answering machine with caller id check

Hi,

I'm looking to make a Raspberry PI or other small computer as a telephone answering machine with caller id check.  The modems currently available don't seem to support the latest caller id version.  Is there a chip that can be used with the Raspberry PI or other small computer that can interface with a telephone connection?  It would need to detect and supply the caller id information to the computer and when told to answer the call play a message and then pass the incoming call (voice) data to the computer for recording.

Thanks for any info?

Lou

    Hello photondemon

Welcome to the element14 Community, we hope you enjoy it! I will move this over to the Raspberry Pi area as it is a better fit.

    Thanks clem57

    Thank you,

    Hi Clem,

The Zoom 3095 is way more expensive than I'm looking for.  I'm interested in building this kind of answering machine for sale and a $20 or less modem might be okay but $50 is too much.  Are there any chips that might be used in phones that display the caller id data that could be used with the Raspberry>

    Thanks, Lou

No chip is needed, but you need to program the GPIO to listen to a ring and then FSK the remaining information from a bleep. http://electronics.howstuffworks.com/question409.htm
