Connecting dead laptop/android tablet displays to raspberry pi

rohan.bhamre

i have a dead laptop with 15 inch display and an old lenovo tab 3 7 essential.

There is an idea but i don't know how much of it is possible. can i disassembly the android screen out of motherboard and connect the ribbon cable to raspi will it work?

also can i use 15 inch display directly to the raspberry pi will that work?

rohan.bhamre  I have no idea how to drive it directly.  Sorry.  However... you can purchase LCD controller cards online for about $30 US if your heart is really set on using the laptop display as a monitor.

The banner picture for Project14 | Off the Shelf: Take a Project Off the Shelf and Start Working on It!  -has one of these controller and a laptop screen.  The project is My late (and incomplete) entry for the Portable Electronics Kit - The Pi-IDE (Pie-Eyed).

avnrdf  did this with a FPGA. Driving a Laptop LCD using an FPGA.

It is not the answer you are looking for, but it is what I can offer.

Every display comes with a driver IC. You'll have to interface the driver IC with Rasp Pi. For interfacing, you should have the datasheet of the driver IC and you'll have to write a code so that all the pins of the driver ICs get the required logic level to work correctly.

Indeed, I did connect an old laptop display to my Pi - that's my still unfinished project referenced by kmikemoo

I used a cheap LVDS driver board to interface with the LCD, and it has HDMI input to allow direct connection to the Pi's HDMI output.

So, my method and the other linked by Mike take care of converting the Pi output to the LVDS signal the Laptop LCD requires.

The android screen could possibly be driven in the same way, but you may have more difficulty finding a compatible driver board - they're searched by screen model number - and cater for laptop screens mainly.

this will take some doing but you can make this work

    • Lookup the model about the screen. & download LCD info
    • find a driver IC for that model
    • check the IC for IO
    • use recommended driver IC
    • Now look for the software for the driver. and don't just look for pi. Remember that the OS is really Debian (Linux)
    • GOOD  LUCK
