Resurrecting my Pi Desktop and I/O button seems not to work

I have selected BUG as a category. It seemed the closest choice. I apologise in advance if it wastes anybody's time.

I resurrected my Pi Desktop (a couple of years old or even more) with its Pi 3 which works fine when naked and with a new microSD card with the latest OS installed. I added a new battery to the Pi Desktop and reassembled it.  I did NOT try to copy over the deneb package because you can't get the SD card out easily and I knew that the OS was fine when outside the Desktop.

The Pi 3 boots up nicely but the on/off button on the lid seems to have no effect. The blue light comes on however. Maybe it is very slow, maybe it isn't working. Maybe I should have added some of your special software. Please advise.

I do not intend to boot up from anywhere except the micro SD card. However, I will be using the Desktop with an external HDD connected to the USB. This particular HDD works fine on my Windows 10 laptop and on my Pi 400. The Pi Desktop's on/off switch would be really nice to have, however.

Please advise me how to get the on/off switch working.  Also, is the battery necessary for anything except the RTC? If I don't need it I will put it back in my HP 12c calculator!

Thanks in advance
