What would you look forward to being on the Raspberry Pi 5 ?

cstanton

I remember people were really keen for more USB ports, for a standardised board layout, for more GPIO, for customisable GPIO, for Wireless LAN / WiFi, Bluetooth, faster ethernet, faster USB, and being a 64bit, quad core, faster processor.

And, we have all of that. We even have the compute module with pcie broken out.

What would you want on the Raspberry Pi 5?

If they could squeeze support for an M.2 SSD on there somewhere, that would be a great next step. It seems that the SD card is currently its weakest point.

A small convenient terminal board for external power feed without a separate adapter.

    1. Ability to expand RAM so I can plug in 64GB if I want to (and I do).

    2. A built-in on/off switch that performs an orderly shutdown.

    3. More USB3/4 connectors, don't need as many of the old USB connectors anymore, if at all.

    4. As already mentioned an SSD slot.

    5. More cores and more powerful GPU.

Basically all the goodies that would enable it to be an awesome desktop if you wanted it.

Here's some ideas : ) Some are highly specific to expected use-cases of course. For instance, PC-replacement could require a lot of USB ports, but I don't happen to use it as a PC (and have no intention to do so in the foreseeable future):

    * Better power connector, just a DC barrel socket, at 5.0V (not 5.1V) or 12V, and on-board regulator. Screw terminals as robogary says would be nice-to-have too, but either way, the current silliness with 5.1V is crazy and it's a #1 annoyance for a lot of people, and the 'official pi power supply' is not a solution for everyone, for good reasons

    * I'm personally OK with less USB : ) if it means lower profile. An embedded USB for Flash or external connections would be useful, so that Flash can be plugged onto the board, or other USB devices can be connected using that connector.

    * External connections on just 2 sides, i.e. any microSD to be on the side with the video interface(s) for instance

    * Latest WLAN standard support and BLE of course : )

    * M.2 connector, totally agree with Nico, it would improve reliability and give performance gains

    * 3 mm (not 2.5 mm) mounting holes, with space surrounding them

    * More GPU : ) would be nice to see NVidia on-board.

    * I'm OK with the current processor performance, even Pi 3B+ level performance is sufficient for my needs, and it's easier to power and doesn't need cooling usually

    * Retain GigEth of course

    * Power controller with with safe power-up/power-down capability

    * Would be nice to see normal full-size HDMI connector for one of the monitor connections

    * sound could be nice to see addressed, e.g. ability to plug in a small speaker (i.e. on-board audio and small amp)

Also, although personally I like the current performance of the processor, if raspberrypi.org were looking for a great differentiator, perhaps a heavily multi-cored (e.g. 16 cores or more) processor could be interesting : ) It would be fantastic for learning about modern computer architecture perhaps, and how to make best use of it. Whether that could be done at a low price-point I have no idea, but if anyone can do it, it could be raspberrypi.org since they have the ability to sell millions of their products.

    +1 for all of those.

And especially for the power supply!

The Pi4 has USB-C power input - it looks like that standard already includes the option to use 5, 9, 12, 15, or 20 volts - maybe just beef up the USB-C input so that an adapter with higher voltage can be used. For example, the USB-C powered iPads all seem to have adapters that support 9v.

    Hi Nico,

That's a great idea too! If they could use that capability with the USB-C connection, that would be a very useful feature! I try to avoid Pi 4 partly because of the power awkwardness currently.

Ok, for me simple stuff like a second Ethernet Connector yes two RJ45s, and a lot more IO, maybe even a slot for a DIM 4G would be nice.

OH YES.. change the power adapter to a standard barrel please no more funny USB-C thing

Pi 4 is still good value - I like the focus on affordability.

    • An Apple M2 CPU (or equivalent) would be nice, but that is a ways off.
    • I wanted dual monitors and that happened in Pi 4, which is great, now of course I want higher resolution and frame rate
    • A different PCB form factor would be useful - with almost all connectors on one side..... Much easier to design a useful enclosure with decent cable management. Right now you can't use all the resources without creating a giant octopus mess of cables.
    • A design better suited to an efficient cooling system - many hats get in the way of cooling systems, which are already a kludge.
    • Maybe a Raspberry Pi app store with drag and drop installation of apps - this is probably the biggest deterrent to wider adoption.

You could do one of these discussions on next gen Pi Pico - there is a lot of scope for future variants of Pico.

I'm going to be facetious in my answer. I would want to be able to buy the Pi's that are already available:(
