Happy Pi 5 Day!

stanto

Well, for some.

The Pi Hut sent out the Raspberry Pi 5 ordered via the Hackspace Magazine priority codes yesterday, and mine arrived today!

Though I'm still waiting on any actually useful components to use it, like a case, heatsink, the weird 5v, 5a power supply.

Raspberry Pi 5

I'll at least be able to set it up without relying too heavily on the USB peripherals at first Slight smile

I think that I'll run some benchmarks.

Congrats on receiving the new toy.  I had no idea that it came with a 5A supply.  I only have a Pi3 and truth be told I have no idea what current it consumes.

It only needs the 5A (Pi5 specific) supply if it needs to serve more than 600 mA to downstream USB devices.

I've since done a little research.  I found these benchmark figures for Raspberry Pi models up to RPi 4B.

    https://www.pidramble.com/wiki/benchmarks/power-consumption

When all 4 cores are engaged the RPi 4B current consumption is listed as 1280mA.

I read elsewhere that the RPi 5 runs more efficiently than the RPi 4B so perphaps the current will be even less when running the same benchmark.

Incidentally, my humble RPi 3B model is listed as consuming 730mA of current.

It sounds real. I measured about 0.5A when running apt update without any peripherals attached.

Blog #10: Raspberry Pi Self Power Consumption Measurement

As Jan Cumps mentioned, most of the power requirement is budget for external peripherals. Especially USB has quite a high requirements. In theory you can turn your Raspberry Pi to 4-port USB Phone charger.....

Nice blog.  Just read through it now.  It contains some good benchmark plots.
