Bitscope for tracing rifle or shotgun chamber pressure?

Might it be possible to utilize your Bitscope for Raspberry Pi whereby to convert a strain gauge resistance change into a nominal PSI chamber pressure, for a strain gauge glued to the barrel of a shotgun or rifle above mid chamber?  The intent would be to capture an oscilloscope like image of the output over time whereby to image chamber pressure from ignition to barrel exit, and to quantify the pressure peak as well as it's placement in time?

It would work. You would need to use the right kind of gauge and amplifier.

Sticking gauges to things requires careful surface preparation and the use of proper glue that was designed and intended for the purpose. The best stuff requires curing at elevate temperatures.

Only use a Bitscope if you have one lying around - there are much better tools if not.

It would be very difficult to calibrate - the pressure will be high and the shape of the metal around the chamber may not be simple.

Can you tell us what you are trying to do ?

I'd like to use it to work up safe reloads for rifle and shotgun applications.  I have a custom chambered 'wildcat' rifle for which published load data does not exist.

Since the penalty for a mistake is complete loss of your brains I would advise extreme caution !

Interesting idea. We actually make sensors that record shockwaves after exit - complete waveforms. The sensor elements we use are strain gage style pressure sensors so your strain gage idea should work, assuming the chamber provides enough strain signal and as Michael says, the strain gages can be properly mounted. It might be tough to calibrate to actual chamber pressure, but you should be able to determine if a load creates higher or lower pressure than a commercial load.

There was until recently a commercially available system called the 'Pressure Trace II', but the owner had heart surgery and closed down both manufacture and sales.  It called for a 5 volt 350 Ohm strain gage, model number CEA-06-125UN-350.
