DSI broken connector Replacement

Gally
Gally over 1 year ago

I have broken the black insert on the dsi connector of the 7" touch screen display.  Is there anywhere I get a new black plastic insert for the connector to accept a ribbon cable?

Or is the screen now scrap.

My fingers are too large and eyesight too bad to see what needed doing.  The fan had an insert to be removed and I thought the black insert was the same, now I know.

When is a kit not a kit? When they do not supply all teh parts and instructions needed.

Thanks

    Hi,

The black plastic is part of the connector (i.e. the connector manufacturer does not supply the black piece separately, the whole connector is one component).

It might be possible to pull off the black plastic in one piece off another connector and add it to your board, but I've never seen that done, it is very fragile normally.

Your best bet is to replace that entire connector. Maybe a mobile phone repair shop (the small one-man stores in every town) might be able to fix it, they would have the tools, but they might refuse to repair it or accidentally damage it further.

It's beyond economic repair, since it's likely it will cost more in time for someone to unsolder it and fit a new one, compared to the cost of purchasing another touchscreen display. You could always keep the damaged one for future spares (e.g. if the glass breaks).

They are easy to pull out of another connector by slightly bending and reinsert to the target connector.

Great. I've never tried that. In that case, provided the same connector can be found, that could be a very cost-effective repair.

Gally  you'd need to inspect the connector to try to find a logo on it, and then search for that online to locate the part number for the entire connector, and order it. It is very possible that there are different manufacturer connectors with slightly different black plastic clips, and raspberrypi.com may have used different manufacturer connectors over the years, so you'd need to check your board.

You are correct shabaz, the connector needs to be exactly the same.

No logo or ID. I need to know who makes the display board and try to contact them for details or just buy another one. I am currently trying to glue the two parts together and have bout one from amazon that looks the same. I hope one or the other will provide a suitable anchor for the ribbon cable.

    Thanks for the advice

I don't think glue will work.

According to Raspberry Pi annual accounts, most of their boards are made by Sony in Wales. So that is where I have sent a request for a spare part. PI Hut support did not know or could not say where their stock was made and recommended consumer forums.
