How do you compare Ubuntu Core OS vs Raspberry Pi OS?

HKPhysicist

Dear all Experts,

I have a Raspberry Pi 4 and am going to buy a new Raspberry Pi IO Board with Pi 4 Compute Board.

I am planning to install one of this OS.  How do you compare them if my goal is to build a super stable IoT networking gear.

Ubuntu Core OS:

Raspberry Pi OS:

Thanks for your opinions.  Nerd

What is your experience level with both OS?

They change with upgrades. Those upgrades sometimes depreciate or change the way things are done. I have numerous Pi running the Pi O/S that I refuse to upgrade. They contain software that is not supported anymore and/or the configuration would need to be different to perform the task on the upgrade.

If you are picking an OS that you will need to support, I recommend it be an OS you are familiar with and will continue to be familiar with.

    Hello,

    Thanks for your opinions.

Could we say that Raspberry OS is more native than Ubuntu Core OS?

I expect Raspberry OS can tune Pi 4 board better.

I use the Raspberry Pi OS. Debian like Ubuntu. Stable and no hassle.

Lite in my case, because I use them without monitor / gui.

common knowledge says: Debian (on which AFAIK Raspberry Pi OS is based) - stable but not bleeding edge, proven versions of software can be kept without upgrade for the long time (something like Redhat Enterprise Linux).

Ubuntu - quickly adopts all the new and shiny, loved by some developers (who cannot stand not having  the newest versions of all the libraries/Python interpreter), simply needed for some (undergoing quick development) software (that can be difficult to install on Debian because of unmet  dependencies) but can be less stable/faster changing than Debian

I struggled with the word better. More focused. Limited hardware since it is only their productions.

Are you able to share your definition of IoT Network Gear. Maybe there is development in one O/S more than the other that you could take advantage of. Throw out some details on the development arena, more knowledgeable member might chime in.

I agree with colporteur, we should know what your plan is for IoT work.  If, for example, you want to work with the 40 pin I/O (or whatever the compute module equivalent is), I think Pi_OS would be better.  And if you would need help from the Internet, you'd be more likely to find the answer.
