No sound from the phone jack on my Raspberry PI 3

HI!

I am having problem trying to go get sound to come out of the Raspberry Pi 3 . I am running Ubuntu MATE  and trying to listen to on line radio stations. It seems like all the proper sound items are installed, but not getting any sound to come out of the phone jack onboard the Raspberry PI. Could anyone give me some advice as to get the sound to come out of the phone jack?

Thanks for any help!!

Don

    Hello Donald,

I was worried the same when I tried to hear something with my earphones but then I have tried with other models and things was ok. Please check with some other jack plugs if you can because I think that some of these are a bit shorter and the contact is not closed perfectly in the right point as the same jack includes also other signals. After a couple of tries I have found one that works perfect.

    HI Enrico,

Let me try some other phone jack and see what I find out. Do you know the PI 3 has a audio chip on board? I have been looking to see if it had one, but no findings from the PI web site.

To be honest, I have not checked the hardware at all, but in the PI System setting you can choose between HDMI and Jack analog audio. Maybe I have done this mistake? Sounds strange but everything is possible... Strange that my - supposed phantom - audio jack worked image

Ok, joking apart, please read this post with all the technical specifications on your raspberry PI3: Raspberry Pi 3 Model B Technical Specifications

About the audio jack I have supposed this issue because the same jack has more contacts than audio only; it includes also the composite video output to if the jack is not of the exact length it works bad or don't work at all. Same problem I met in past with some smartphones.

    Hi Enrico,

i want say  thank you for giving may information for helping me on my problem. I was looking into the PI web site and found that the audio jack on the Pi does two jobs, video and audio. It also showed that the jack has more than two connections. They call this TRRT type of jack. So I ordered one on the auction site and when it gets to me I will see what the out come will be.  I will let you know how I make out. This maybe the answer to my problem.

    Check in with you soon!
