Pi zero WIFI....

I've designed a board which plugs onto a raspberry pi zero to provide WIFI through an ESP8266 module on the serial port of the Raspberry pi.

 

Now you may say: Why not just use an USB-wifi dongle? Those are cheap and work out-of-the-box! You're right. But in some cases that's not the best solution: When you are space-constrained and need exactly ONE usb device, not having to use a HUB pays off. imageimage

I have not yet soldered on the connectors in these pictures, to facilitate other configurations should that turn out to be practical.

 

So...

 

If you think this is useful, If you have some programming skills, If you have a use for this.....

I have the following offer: At the cost of the components (EUR 2.50 for the ESP, EUR 1.00 for the PCB+ rest) and shipping (max EUR 5.25) I can send you one. The deal is that you'll try to make the wifi part usefull....

 

Of course, developing the software is probably more convenient on a "bigger" pi.

 

Should something essential be hooked up wrong. We'll respin the board and get you a new version. No charge. The main reason that I'm not giving the hardware away for free initially is that I don't want people to say: oh, it's free, lets get it, I'll decide later if I need it/can help and then of course nothing happens. By asking for a little bit of money I force people to think about it and scare away the freeloaders. Also, the offer applies "as long as supplies last", i.e. whenever I think there is enough activity...

    Parker, Like I said the First ones that he made were 4 USB ports and they work Great!  So, you can find those on eBay for both Zeros 1.2 and 1.3 version boards.

    Clem, the ones I got have POGO pins that contact the DATA USB pads on the back of the Zero, on the OTG connection and another pair of pins on the UBS pads for the Power micro USB input.

    Auch! That depends on those test-pads being in the same place. The first pi-zero sold was PCB revision 1.2,  and they moved the test-pads for rev 1.3...

    Actually the Zero powers the Hub.  The micro USB input is on the Zero, I guess I should have mentioned that.

    I have to admit that is an interesting use for a difficult to use board, that is the ESP8266 one. I have here a number of them. And as it happens, when trying to use them I found them to be difficult approaching impossible.

     

    Whereas the Pi Zero, I have here a number of them, including one with the socket for the headers soldered on. I'm still waiting for inspiration to strike.

     

    Soon I hope. I'll keep your ideas in mind of course.

    Pi zero does have a lot more ram and processing power though.

    Interesting that you are having issues with the esp8266, I just got a couple of them and I think they are going to become my go to board for remote sensors around my house.

    I found them extremely easy to work with and code them up using the arduino IDE. I put a little REST server on them and when requested, they read whatever sensor that is attached and send back a JSON packet that is easy for me to deal with elsewhere.

     

    Did you just get the bare boards? I got them configured as a NodeMCU for ~$8 from amazon, but I think all they did was mount a serial chip and break out the pins to a more usable format.

    Hello!

    Actually two bare boards of the regular ESP8266 boards, in that strange format for the pins,  (See the cover of the Make Magazine for Feb/March of this year.) and the easier to use Huzzah module that Adafruit designed.

     

    Of both, I found that they saw my regular WiFi service and one that's more virtual. It's a program that basically sets up one.

     

    I just couldn't connect to either network with them.

     

    That's why. I might try again later this season.

    Looks like a very useful board.

    I've just started paying with the ESP modules, so I haven't needed to interface to the Pi .... yet.

     

    I can see the advantages this provides over the USB dongle along with space saving.

     

     

    Well done, maybe later it might be ordering time.
