PiZero Powered through CRT Components?

Greetings all! Long time lurker and love to read everyone's projects, discussions, and debates.

I finally picked up a PiZero (camera edition) because I want to recreate the CRT Raspberry Pi project featured here at Element14 with my son (5 year old). This was his idea as I started going around browsing and he hasn't stopped talking about this since image.  Ideally, I'd like to use the circuitry from the CRT to power the Pi so I only have one power cord. I'm using a Sylvania SSC192 which has a VHS player on it. From what I see on the schematics, it looks like there is a 5V point available. Is it safe to solder onto this point and not damage the Pi? I will have an additional switch in place so the Pi doesn't have power running to it 24/7.

I appreciate the help here, thank you! image

Officially there is a fuse between the power input of the pi and the rest of the pi. By connecting something to an internal 5V point you are circumventing that fuse.
IMHO that is not that bad. If the power going into the pi is limited the options for big mishaps are similarly limited.

I would personally not solder directly to the pi except to mount the  40 pin header. I would then put a connector of sorts on the header.

So if i took a micro usb cable, cut it, and soldered that to the 5V point in the TV/VCR spot, I should still be safe. Is this correct to assume? I love this device and want to learn more but I'm not afraid of spending another $5 if I make a mistake.

Correct! But.... I am now at a place where my zero is located, and I checked the PCB: Frederick is right. The zero does not have that polyfuse.

Beautiful, thank you for the help (you too Frederick)!

I'm going to install a switch so when I power the TV on it won't just shoot power to the Pi. That "SHOULD" help in this situation I would imagine. Hopefully I'll have something to show in the future or at the very least some great learning experiences and the drive to learn more than an awesome retro gaming system.

Forgive my ignorance, but CRT=? (what?) Here in (USA) the last century (1900-1999) CRT = Cathode Ray Tube.  This is why "I cry wolf" all the Time, in requesting Posters/Comment(ers) to the element14  community, to PLEASE also post their Physical (geographical) Location. "Context is Everything"

The OP wants to recreate following build if I'm not mistaken: Raspberry Pi Zero Retro Gaming System

So by CRT, he's referring to an old TV/monitor.

USC = University of Southern California (Los Angeles, Ca; USA). DAD = Father (Me, a natural-born Male), NYC = New York City. As a Patent Atty (in USA), I rest my case, about eliciting Geographic info. But (USCDADNYC (NY NY USA)) is as far as I should have to

go? I shouldn't have to explain University/College Culture here in the USA. Nor should I have to tout College Football [ USA  College Football NOT = to World Football (Soccer in the USA)]imageimageimage Sunglasses needed at USC. Wish I was there instead of NYC. GO Trojans! USC's College Football Team name. USCDADNYC (NY NY USA)

Wow...I've never heard of anyone referring to their location like that in my life, especially in the US. So for Roger to post "What the h***...", that is exactly what I was thinking.

I'm from New Jersey (USA) and that's all anyone needs to know, personally. As for CRT, I did leave the exact model so in terms of information, more than enough has been provided.

To JRF: a fellow Tri-State(er). (Tri-state: being NY NJ, Connecticut).AAR did JRF ever go to TCFyyyy (Trenton  Computer Festival yr.,yr.,yr.,yr)? Usually held in the Month of March (once/year) in the town of Trenton, NJ. TCF2016 had some Arduino/RaspPi Workshops, BUT not even close to the level of discussion here at element14. BTW are you a College/Pro Football Fan? I follow USC Trojans, although my BSEE -73 was from Syracuse University and I follow the Pittsburgh Steelers."Context is Everything"
