Raspberry pi zero with camera

danish45
danish45 over 8 years ago

I just bought a raspberry pi zero from http://www.w11stop.com/ and wanted to use it for image processing. Previously I have a camera which I used it with raspberry pi 3, can I use the same camera with pi zero also or there is any specific pi zero camera? I have asked this question many times but unable to find an answer. Please help

Thank you!

    Hi Danish,

The same camera can work, but I think the flex cable doesn't fit I recall reading something like this. So you'll need to google for 'pi zero camera flex cable' and buy that too, the 'Zero doesn't come with it.

However, for your particular scenario you are likely better sticking with your Pi 3 though, it has some significant advantages for image processing due to the more recent processor.

    Dear Shabaz,

Can you please elaborate a little more about not using pi zero for image processing! I am using pi zero for the purpose that it is alot smaller and a lot cheaper than pi 3 and in my case i want to make the most compact solution for my project!

    Hi Danish,

I don't know what image processing you're doing, but the 'Zero isn't a smaller/cheaper Pi 3, but is a board with an extremely old (less capable) and slower chip.

If your code works with acceptable performance on it then this is of course very good, but the warning was just that one won't necessarily achieve the same results as on the Pi 3 (and possibly the performance could be extremely different [worse] on the 'zero depending on what is being done).

There is also some hardware acceleration in the Pi 3 chip (something called 'NEON') that isn't present in the 'zero. Some image processing libraries will make use of it, and if it isn't present then they run slower.
