You might have just seen the official joint announcement from the Raspberry Pi Foundation and element14 regarding an exclusive new customization service for the Raspberry Pi, and we'd love to hear your thoughts on the subject.

 

Bulk Customization Services

The facts are these:

 

You can now open a dialogue with element14 about creating a Raspberry Pi that's tailored to specific needs, on orders of 3,000 units or more. You can reconfigure the board, add new functionality, add or remove features, change the memory configuration; pretty much anything besides tinkering with the GPU and related software. Cooking Up a Custom Raspberry Pi

Clearly this is aimed squarely at OEM manufacturers, suppliers and bigger companies due to the minimum order quantity, but such places are still populated by engineers and makers who'd be the ones that determine just what a customized Raspberry Pi would require for specific needs.image

 

So we thought it'd be valuable to get the element14 community's opinion on this new service.

 

Will companies find a lot of use for it, and what might they need a custom Pi for?

 

Which kinds of customization are likely to be the most popular? Expansion of the device, or minimization?

    I would love to see a RPi made for robotic purpose, for that it sould have a smoothed and really protected 5V intput, as well as wifi built in (but that is an extra).

     

    Really a 5 Volt input that will tolerate a shitty power rail on the input would ramp this SBC to a all new level !!

    You already have that: The raspberry pi 2 tolerates 3.3V (*) to 5.5V on its ("officially 5V") input. The only thing is that it won't be able to power USB and HDMI peripherals with a proper 5V if the input 5V isn't up to par.

     

    (*) it stops booting around 2.8V IIRC.... The "5.5V" was not tested. From the datasheet.

    Out of interest did you put the 2.8 V into the 5V input or in to the 3.3 thus saving the headroom of the regulator?!

    No, I "feed" the 5V input of the 'pi . Or to be more correct: I feed the pi through the 5V pin on the GPIO connector. This bypasses the input "fuse". In previous experiments with the PI 1,  I found that ethernet would stop working below about 4V on the input. This was due to the 3.3V power line dropping below 3.0V and the ethernet chip failing at 3.3V-10%. However this time I got very similar results until I put a good capacitor on the "5V" near the 'pi. Apparently short surges through the long cables to the power supply were responsible for some sort of crash when closing in on the limit voltage.... The dropout of an efficient DCDC converter is very small.

    Just as a follow up, I recently tried my homemade step-up converter that bring the lipo voltage to 5 volt and without any surprizes... it didn't worked... you need quite a beefy regulator to step-up the voltage and still have enough power at the output.

     

    The raspi turned on and eventually powered itstelf off as soon as I launched chromium image

    The current needed by the raspi 2 + my keyboard made the voltage on the regulator drop dramatically since it was overloaded with bare raspbian running...

     

    I need to find a new step-up that is drastically better than the TPS 61200 that I used...
