Can I configure a Raspberry Pi as a wifi router?

Just getting into the Raspberry Pi world. I have a hobby app that I will need wireless access via wifi. I am hoping to use the Pi to run the program/software as well as be the wifi access point.

I know just enough computer-eze to be dangerous but I can (and do) read instructions.

In case anyone interested in talking me through this: the specific application I want to use is JMRI with a SPROG and Android Engine Driver on my smartphone.

Thank you! A list of instructions for sure :0 but I'm game to read them. Did think tho that perhaps I was getting the cart before the horse so to speak. What kind/type of keyboard and monitor would be recommended for such an application?

No keyboard or monitor needed if you only need it as a wireless AP. First time you boot, you can SSH and setup the computer through the Ethernet. I am going to document the process later.
