Raspberry Pi 7" Touchscreen Display resolution problem

Macmuchmore
Macmuchmore over 8 years ago

I just got the Raspberry Pi 7" Touchscreen Display (using it with a Raspberry Pi 3 and the latest Raspbian Jessie) and on the box it says the screen resolution is 800x480. In the System tab of the Raspberry Pi Configuration, it lists the resolution at 720x480.

1) Why is it not going to 800x480 automatically?

2) If I attempt to change the resolution in the System tab, in the dropdown it does not list the 800x480 resolution.

3) Can I actually get the Pi to display 800x480, or is 720x480 it? If I can, how do I change the output to 800x480?

4) if the screen is only 720x480, why does the box say 800x480?

Thanks,

Macmuchmore

To AB, I think I have the same Equipment that you have. I have a RaspPi 3B and "official" 7" Touchscreen mounted in a SmartiPi Enclosure. I never gave it much thought as to what my resolution is. So I am running the on the latest Raspbian Jesse with PIXEL on a Raspberry Pi 3.  So to get to the preference pane I am referring to, do the following:

    1) click on the Raspberry at the top left of your screen to access the main menu

    2) select Preferences

    3) select Raspberry Pi Configuration

    4) in the configuration window that displays, click on the System tab, if it is not already selected

    5) there is a Resolution option - click the Set Resolution button

    6) in the popup that is displayed, it gives you a dropdown with different resolutions - the default on mine is 720x480

I have to admit that while I want my resolution to correctly be 800x480, I can live with 720x480.  I just wish there was a screen with an increased vertical pixel count, say, 800x600.  I am afraid to select a higher resolution - could someone advise what this would do to the official 7" screen?  Thanks!

To AB: Thx for letting us know where to find Touch-Screen Resolution Setting. As long as the display & Touch-input worked, I never gave much thought to the Resolution. However since I am not planning to create my own GUI, I am beginning to question the Usefulness of a 7" touch-screen. I am just using the Touch-screen as a Display. To Display URL's via a Internet Browser. I find that using the Touch-Screen to browse is nearly impossible. The Click-able items on the 7' Touch-screen are Too Small, for my Finger(s) to navigate/Click-On. Luckily, an attached USB Mouse moves/acts CONCURRENTLY w/ the Touch-Screen Mouse. So in retrospect (MMQ: Monday Morning Quarterbacking)  I wouldn't have gotten a 7" Touch-Screen. BUT there Wasn't/Presently a LCD Display w/o Touch-screen. A Screen that could be in my current Pi 3 Configuration: RPi 3B, 7' touch-screen, in a SmartiPi Enclosure.

Kind off topic, but it's about screens, so.

I am making a laptop using a raspberry pi zero.  I want to use this https://www.adafruit.com/product/1680

tft display from adafruit but the driver(https://www.adafruit.com/product/1590 ) is more expensive than I would like for my budget build. Does anyone have an alternative maybe without touchscreen capabilitie, that would work, and be as cheap as possible. Thanks in advance!
