New Pi 3B+ error condition?

starbasessd
starbasessd over 7 years ago

Setup:

Brand new Pi3B+, New, confirmed good 2.5a USB power supply, HDMI monitor connected, USB keyboard and mouse connected. 8 & 16GB SD cards loaded with Raspbian Stretch & Lite (both 4/2018 versions). 3 different USB 64GB memory sticks (different manufacturers). SD and USB sticks tested on older Pi3Bs, known good working.

Pi3B+ set to boot from either SD or USB.When powered on and connected to HDMI monitor, I do not get lightning bolt indicating low power, and I do not get low voltage detected on command line.

After booting, and it does boot up to desktop or command line as appropriate using all the above.

My concern / issue is the green activity LED blinks 4 times rapidly, pauses 1 second, and repeats, continuously. Everything I googled relates to a no boot condition.
Is this something to be concerned about?
Thanks.

    Hi Kevin,

I don't have a 3B+ to compare, but google suggests it's just a micro SD activity light. I'm fairly sure there's no issue. There are commands to see what processes are running and disk (i.e. micro SD card) activity that can be google'd, but it's not a concern if you've installed as described from the official site using the software image available from there.

The normal activity light is not a regular 4 rapid pulses, pause 1 second, and repeat. Normal activity shows random. And it happens whether there is an SD installed or not.

If there is nophysical fault evident and no s/W either I would say that this is some activity measurement especially now you are on a new board and a new OS version I assume to support it. Some disk access tends to be pseudo regular so I wouldn't really panic over it unless it becomes an issue!

I run the same version (4/2018) of Raspbian Stretch on a Pi 2B, Pi 3B, and the new Pi 3B+. I run the same version on both the 3B and 3B+ running on SD and USB boot. I have noticed it seems to run much slower on the 3B+ when doing the initial sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y no matter which SD or USB memory device is used.

The USB/Network interface is different on the 3+ so  there may be an issue.

Also remember if you are re using the same USB/Flash cards the 2nd  writes are always about twice as slow as they are in fact erase /Write cycles.

Other than that who knows ...maybe ask RPI them selves ?
