Raspberry PI IR surface temperature sensor

Hello,

I have a Raspberry pi 3 with a MXL90614 from Sharplace. I am using it to measure the ground temperature of a race track, but its range is something like 2cm. Is there any way to make that distance longer so I can measure it at a distance? A couple of meters would be ideal, but not sure how to do it. I've tried different lenses, but if anything they have made it worse! Could I add more power?? Or could I add a constant offset to the resultant temperature??? Thank you.

P.D: the sensor in the picture is inside a webcam support, but I angle it to get it close to the floor.

You should be able to find an MLX90614-DCI with a 5 degree lens on it for about $60.

Thanks Douglas! If I'd seen this I would have bought it to start with... Any idea of the distance it reaches?

I don't know about this particular setup but I have seen thermal cameras working out beyond 100 meters.

If a track is 20 meters wide, a 5 degree lens would be 226 meters away for the track to fill the field of view.

Seeing the track at an oblique angle would reduce this distance.

I have a thermal sensor like this:

When I point it at the ground today I get 20 degrees C. When I point it at the blue sky it reads -17 degrees C, so it works on whatever is in its field of view, no matter how far away it is.

It cost about $12 but does not have a computer output - just a display.

Yep! That's exactly the one I use now for the track. I am working on this sensor so I can get information streamed throughout the day and into my pc. I think my best option is the sensor you mentioned. I'll keep you updated on the progress in case anyone needs anything similar.

    Hi,

i have working on  project which is raspberry pi interfacing with MLX90614 thermal ir sensor to measure human temperature, but i did not find any suitable library ,

Please give me some example how to read temperature using mlx90614

    Thanks
