What would you like to see tested on the Raspberry Pi 4?

We have a couple of these in the office that we can run software / test some things on - so what would you like to see tested on the hardware that would help to swing the decision for you as to whether or not it's worth it?

I've seen a few questions about Sega Rally running on MAME, questions about h264 encoding, realtime transcoding - for some of these I'd have to find the software/setup but it's certainly do-able.

So let me know, what do you want to see tested on the Pi 4?

    Hi Christopher,

This is not maybe a test, but maybe something that could be queried from RPF.. it concerns the BLE interfacing from the SoC.

In the past, the UART that it used required the other UART (that could be used as a console) to vary in baudrate, unless the core speed was fixed.

It is the issue discussed here: https://www.raspberrypi.org/documentation/configuration/uart.md

I was wondering, is that now resolved in Pi 4, i.e. can we have a UART for console that does not vary in baud rate, and have the BLE working.

The reason is, I would always want the UART pins exposed on the 40-way header to permanently provide console access, but with a fixed baudrate, and without fixing core speed, and have bluetooth functioning.

It may be fixed on Pi 4's new chip, I just don't know. Either way, it would be handy to know if the behaviour in this area is similar to earlier Pi's or not.

Also, I drew this diagram, now old: Raspberry Pi 3 Block Diagram (mainly through guesswork). It would be nice to update it for Pi 4, I don't mind having a shot at it, but would be good if someone with Pi hardware knowledge could double-check it. I find such block diagrams useful, for giving a quick overview of what the Pi 4 is about.

Just FYI: This sounds plausible: The GPIO module is probably clocked at that 250Mhz. On simpler ARM processors like the STM32 family the same happens: the CPU core runs at some frequency and then you get a bunch of choices for the IO module clocks and bus clocks. Sometimes completely separate from the CPU clock sometimes your choice is restricted to "div2" or "div 1 or div2 as long as the result is below xxx". For the BCM2711 hardware running the IO modules at 250MHz base clock sounds reasonable.

I remember / am familiar with this issue, I think there was/is a way to check this by interrogating the hardware from what I recall. I suspect this hasn't changed.

I know this is probably a bad suggestion but how about running DOOM!. Haven't seen it running on an RPi 4B ........ yet image

The question here is, is DOSBox acceptable, or recompiled for linux/other OS ?

Though I doubt I can get Doom 3 running image

Haha.. I was wrong, this looks do-able

Picking a random Pi forum for this. Saw a few of my favorite respondents, so this was the winner. I wanted to note the two changes to Pi-4 that cause me some grief (and re purchasing). First is using mini-HDMI for the display cables. I understand this is probably for real estate reasons. Would have preferred a stacked plug design, akin to the USBs, and kept the HDMI the same size (at least for one monitor).  Second is changing up the power input to USB-C, with the new power requirements as well, make it so the sourcing is very limited.

I am able to make all the necessary adjustments to my workbench, but it would have been nice to have a heads up prior to release. Also, selling out on the day of announced release is a little disheartening. By the time I got the approval to purchase, they were all gone. (wait list)

    Jack

Does throttling due to temperature adversely affect 4K video quality/performance?

Using it with a PI 7" Display. I will try it again but there is an documentation issue in that the board supplied with the 7" display is used to power the PI but I doubt that it supplies 3.5 Amps. Also, it is back to the old mini USB power. Do I power the display separately? Should I power the it from the pi? Still researching it but my first attempt was unsuccessful.

Sure, and what would you want tested on the hardware?
