Raspberry Pi Switch???

Hello,

I am looking to put a switch on my raspberry pi so I don't have to keep unpluging and pluging in my raspberry pi. I found switches, but their outputs are 7 volts and the raspberry pi only needs 5 volts. I has two questions....

               1) If I input 7 volts into my raspberry pi will it fry it or will it be ok???

               2) If the pi would fry is there any 5 volts switches you could lead me to so I don't fry my pi???

                                                                                                                                                                               Thanks In Advance,

                                                                                                                                                                                                        Nehemiah Branson

P.S. I think Ben Heck did something similar in one of his raspberry pi episodes.

I found the easiest way to add a power switch to my Pi was to use a power strip with a power switch on it. Now mind you you still need to use the shutdown or halt command to properly power off your Raspberry Pi but then the switch will safely remove power from your Pi without having to unplug the power adapter and re-plug the adapter back in to start it back up.

I also keep the power adapter to my USB hub in the power strip, and if you have an older composite monitor you can add that to the power strip and power everything on and off with one switch.

    Hi,

I don't quite understand your question.  When you say 'switch', are you thinking of a mechanical switch like an on/off switch or are you referring to a 7v switch mode power supply?

Applying 7v directly to the Pi will fry it!  Depending on what your answer is to my question, the answer will vary.

    Colin
