Raspberry Pi Model B+ (512MB) Changes

For all other information and technical documents on the Raspberry Pi Model B+ 512MB please refer to The specified item was not found.

To determine the board revision, either directly at the Raspberry Pi command prompt, or via a terminal session, type the following command:

image
cat /proc/cpuinfo

Model and revisionCode(s)
Model B Revision 1.02
Model B Revision 1.0 + ECN0001 (no fuses, D14 removed)3
Model B Revision 2.04, 5, 6
Model B Revision 2.0 (512 MB)13, 14, 15
Model B+ Revision 1.27

For Applications Which Rely on the GPIO Header
There has been a change to the GPIO pin out of the B+ to the Model B, to add I2C ID EEPROM support and to add 9 additional GPIO pins. Users wishing to produce portable GPIO code should either avoid using the ID EEPROM, or add code to check the board revision and use this result to drive the correct pins appropriately. With the removal of the P5 and P2 site(s) and redesign of the board, the once 26 pin GPIO block has been extended to 40 pin, the added 9 accessible GPIO are named:

  • GPIO05, GPIO06
  • GPIO12, GPIO13
  • GPIO16, GPIO19
  • GPIO20, GPIO21, GPIO26

Along with three additional Ground pins in the same extended block.

USB Output Power / Ports

The USB Hub and Ethernet controller has been changed from the SMSC LAN9512-JZXSMSC LAN9512-JZX to the SMSC LAN9513-JZXSMSC LAN9513-JZX , this increases the supported USB ports to 4 downstream, one upstream.

ID EEPROM Support
Two GPIO pins have been added to allow an extension board to communicate over I2C to identify itself and configure the GPIO pins accordingly

Mounting Holes
Four 2.5mm (drilled 2.9mm for M2.5 screw) non plated mounting holes have been provided. Positions of of the holes are in each corner of the PCB where possible and an on-board connector is not soldered.

Warning: If used to permanently mount the PCB – do not over tighten screws or drill out to fit larger screws, as this will lead to irreversible PCB damage.

LEDs

These have been moved to the opposite side of the board, next to the GPIO and consolidated into an ACT (activity) and PWR (power) LEDs. The ACT LED reflects SD Card access only.

Composite RCA / Audio Jack Changes

The composite video phono/ RCA socket has now been integrated into the 3.5mm audio jack. To use it requires a 4 pole 3.5mm plug which breaks out the video and/or breaks out the audio into the required sockets/plugs.

Material Source and Accuracy

The materials for this document have been sourced from observations of a physical Raspberry Pi B+ compared to the latest Raspberry Pi Model B and relevant technical documentation for parts on each.
