We are very excited to introduce the all new Raspberry Pi Pico, a tiny, $4, MicroPython and C/C++ board with custom RP2040 silicon.

This is the first product from the Raspberry Pi Foundation built with their in house designed RP2040.

At $4 and available individually or even available on reels, this Raspberry Pi is the next step in home and industrial products.

Looking at the edge of the PCB you can see the Raspberry Pi Pico has been designed to be used with header pins or soldered directly onto your products PCB.

    Fred27 I'm also really excited about the PIO. There are some examples in the source code repository for the RP2 port of MicroPython, notably there's an example that can drive WS2812 smart LED using a PIO module. How you program them are described at page 28 in the Pico SDK manual.

    neilk That's partially correct, however the Pico SDK use Cmake and the GCC compiler for ARM. The Pico SDK itself is made out of headers, libraries, examples and build scripts. The build scripts is what Cmake run.

    14rhb You're absolutely right, this Raspberry Pi Pico is indeed a microcontroller like the Arduino or PIC. However unlike those two it's made to be programmed in MicroPython with support for the board in  the Thonny IDE, they worked the author of those to make sure it would work well. As you already noted it can also be programmed in C/C++ via Visual Studio or Eclipse, both making use of cmake and the GCC compilers for ARM.

    Wow, it really is low-cost !

     

    Having a quick look, this isn't supporting Raspbian but microcontroller level more like Arduino or PIC. Programming seems to be via Visual Studio - awesome.
