The 7” Touchscreen Monitor for Raspberry Pi gives users the ability to create all-in-one, integrated projects such as tablets, infotainment systems and embedded projects. The 800 x 480 display connects via an adapter board which handles power and signal conversion. The display will technically work with the Model A and Model B boards (connecting it to the DSI port on the Pi board), however the mounting holes on the back of the display will only line up with the newer board design (A+, B+, Pi 2 and Pi 3).

 

How to Install the Matchbox-Keyboard for your Pi

1. Connect a physical keyboard to the Raspberry Pi (or SSH into it if that’s your thing.)

2. Connect to the internet via WiFi or Ethernet.

3. Open the terminal.

4. Type sudo apt-get install matchbox-keyboard

5. Let the program download & install (takes 30s-1min depending on your connection.)

6. Exit the terminal & reboot your Pi.

7. The keyboard can be found by clicking the Menu -> Accessories -> Keyboard.

 

Operating System Support

In order to be sure you’re running the latest version of Raspbian, connect your Raspberry Pi to the Internet and then open LX Terminal.  Type ‘sudo apt-get update’ to download the latest version of the OS.  Once that’s complete, type ‘sudo apt-get upgrade’ to apply the download to your Raspberry Pi.  That way you’ll have all of the latest drivers and software needed to support the touch screen display.

    Yeah, this is not a bad price for a 7" display, plus you get the touchscreen, integrated keyboard, etc. And tomorrow is my birthday!

    The reduced screen size is because Overscan settings are enabled. you can either comment out the settings in /boot/config.txt or just run raspi-config and select the advanced options then Overscan , Disable…

    Interesting update on the power management issues with the Pi 3 - I tried a Anker iPhone charger/poer pack - and guess what? it worked perfectly with the black and red jump cables.  Very odd but at least that gets me going.

    Just got my new screen and it looks great - but there seems to be serious power management issues with it.

    I've got a new Pi 3 with the latest Raspbian OS.  If I connect two separate microUSB power sources to it, one for the screen and one for the Pi - all's well.  It works fantastically well.

    But I cannot get it to work with the 5v and Gnd jump cables.  It boots halfway through and then I get a rainbow screen and it starts again - basically it goes into a continuous loop.  I tried various different cables and power sources.  Also tried powering through the Pi and also tried through the expansion board.  Same result.  I also tried adding the SDA and SCL cables but that did nothing.

    I then tried to power the Pi through the USB jump lead, basically from the expansion board USB port to the microUSB on the Pi - and that didn't work either.

    So for me that's a serious issue as this is supposed to help me with my Pi Robot project - but if I have to power the screen and the Pi separately plus power the servos and motors - it makes it useless.

    Any suggestions on how best to power the Pi and the screen together would be a great help.

    Hey guys,

    Im making a Laser cut case for the Screen [Open Source As Always].

     

    I noticed the touch digitizer is larger that the screen on one side, [By about a cm] Does the software allow me access to this area, it would make a great place to have some hot keys [for stuff like keyboard, home etc].

     

    balearicdynamics I can see you have already made a good quality screen housing, ever noticed the digitizer overlap?

    Here is my experience:

    For the first time I tried NOOBS (NOOBS_v1_7_0), I usually dump the latest Raspbian image to the SD, I powered up the RPI 2 B.  Daisy chaining the power to the LCD then from the LCD's USB to the USB Micro on the RPI.

    It came up perfect!!!

    I ran through the Raspbian setup on NOOBS.  I updated & upgraded, rebooted several times.  All still perfect image Then I did a "fdisk -l"

    6 partitions, image 1.2GB still being used by NOOBS, so NOOBS ran well, but I'm not leaving all that wasted space.

    So I pulled the SD out and imaged it with 2016-02-09-raspbian-jessie, put the SD card back in the RPI, powered up, as before, and

    NOTHING, LEDs on the RPI, but pitch blackness on the Display (On my 5 inch screen, with no signal from the RPI, I, at least, get the  backlight).

    I know that all is setup right because nothing has changed.  Same cables, same RPI, same SD.  The only thing different is the Image.

    Here is what I did to get it working again:

    I booted using the HDMI and logged into the RPI.

     

    raspi-config # To get my keyboard setup to US

    apt-get update

    apt-get upgrade # got 13.5 MBs

    rpi-update  #####  <------- I haven't seen this mentioned in these comments

    #                This updated the kernel from 4.1.17 to 4.1.18

     

    I rebooted and everything is working again.  image

    Does the device driver have a timeout sleep? How does it detect the screen in the first place? If it is talking to the screen, and the response goes away, wouldn't it go into a disabled state until the screen comes back on line, or like unplugging the HDMI when things are running, with data going in the bit bucket.

    If I wanted to turn the screen off, but leave the pi on, is there anything wrong with putting a simple toggle switch into the positive cable running into the screen?

    Have iy watched my detailed videos or other peoples showing in detail the assembly, if it has never worked and your using the latest Jessie Rasbian then it may be worth looking again

    I'm having the same problem as the last two people.  I believe I have followed the instructions correctly, try to power the unit up, I can see the RP 2 B comes on, but the touch screen shows no indication it has power.  No blip on the screen or anything.  I took everything apart and reseated the ribbon cables.  Nothing.   Should I mail the board back in, or has anyone found a fix?

    Er, actually, testing it again... DOSBox won't do it at all.  Even windowed, the cursor sticks to the bottom corner and will not move.
