STMicro and Wurth Special Project - Intro

Robert Peter Oakes
Robert Peter Oakes
1 Nov 2025

STMicroelectronics and Wurth Elektronik in collaboration with Element14 has put together a development kit to evaluate including the addition of products needed to fully review the development/evaluation products.

Wurth Elektronik and STMicro are interested in obtaining feedback on the assembled development kit including ease of use including getting started, Adding extension sensors , quality of parts used (Wurth). I will also include feedback on existing training material in the form of existing online video guides from STMicroelectronics and possibly other sources I use to get started.

This is not an STMicroelectronics STM32 or other MPU programming guide either for the products or the development environment, there will be feedback on how easy it was to install and use in order to exercise the various modules provided. I will also collate all links to resources used to complete this task as not every resource may be easy to find (Foreboding or not ? Slight smile )

Contents
Introduction of special project
Overview of the entire kit and Capabilities
Programmer/debugger  STLINK-V3SET getting started
SensorTile STEVAL-STWINBX1 getting started
Motor control Evaluation Board EVLSPIN32G4-ACT  getting started
Adding external sensors to the main setup
Review of the Wurth Elektronik components used on EVLSPIN32G4-ACT
Ease of use summary

Other things to be added as we go Slight smile

 Intro

The following products were included to complete the project.

image

  1. EVLSPIN32G4-ACT  Motor control Evaluation Board
  2. STLINK-V3SET  Programmer/debugger
  3. STEVAL-STWINBX1, STWIN.box - SensorTile Wireless Industrial Node Development Kit
  4. STEVAL-C34KAT1 Vibrometer and temperature sensor expansion kit
  5. Multicomp MP710256  power supply (not so easy to get with 10A, 30V and 110V supply at a reasonable price :)
  6. DB59M024035 BLDC motor from Nanotek

The evaluation will be broken down as follows (Links will be added as that stage is published, if you feel there should be more sections, let me know in the comments)

While on the face of it this is a straight forward assignment, there is a lot of preparation to do (I even had to build a new computer as when I fired up my project PC the 10 year old CPU decided it was time for a cremation.... so my lab PC is now a nice I7 Ultra with a clean Windows 11 install. so when I look to installing the needed software and drivers, it is a true virgin install so I will share any issues I come across along the way both as images and were needed videos. (I do like my videos Slight smile )

On a more personal note, many of you know me from past involvement with E14 since arround 2014, it is a great community and fun being a top member and providing help and advice to newer community members (Wow, over 11 years already),

For various personal reasons I have been mostly off line for a few years and am now getting back into it so please be gentle with your feedback and suggestions, I have a lot of cobwebs to dust off. and need to learn all the new interface stuff to this upgraded community. If you want to know more about my past projects, reviews and other fun things, just look up my past posts, there are a lot of fun ones and details too.

I was surprised to be selected for this Special Project, to be honest there were many good candidates and I had not been arround for awhile. I welcome the opportunity and thank @rscasny and cstanton for the opportunity. now let's get to writing this up

    Welcome back Peter.

It has been a while since I have seen you post.

As usual, you have an interesting project and I look forward to seeing it evolve.

Sounds good. I'd be interested in knowing a bit more about driving BLDC motors.

The datasheet you point to for the motor isn't all that good (it's just a product catalogue page). The one on the manufacturer's product page for the specific motor is more useful (it gives the connections for the motor windings and the hall-effect sensor).

The link above to the Canadian site doesn't work for me - I get an error page (they think I'm not a real person).

On the US site, it says 120V max (scroll down to the technical spec).

    www.newark.com/.../42AH2836

On the UK site, it states US after the model number and there's a additional delivery charge which means it's being sourced from the US, so would also be 120V max.

peteroakes will be alright in Canada, if that's where he's located, won't he?

Is the power supply 110V option only? Asking because this caused confusion in the Weller road test.
