TI and Würth Elektronik LED RoadTest+ - Soldering Tips - 9/10

Update: The LEDs I thought broken are still working without head, I can't stop laughing... it's like walking without a head...I think the head dome thing is act as lens and the Würth Elektronik LEDs are hardcore even after the solder heat and head broken. So, not even a single LED was broken while the process of making of this project, REALLY COOL.

Just finished with my SMD LEDs soldering with the soldering station I have and I can afford, but the result is awesome with my ideas and tricks...

I am going to say step by step walk through...

My idea is simple and effective, that is, tin coat the copper layer with solder. Use gradual amount of flux and tiny bit of lead and rub the copper layer gently with your solder iron, until the area covered with solder lead/tin layer, it must be thin layer like the image below...

After the tin coating layer the job will be super easy, place the LED with proper polarity, use tiny lead and just place the solder iron on the tin layer, the tin layer will get hot and melt with the solder lead in the iron, now the LED is stick to the copper with tin layer image

As the LED trace is bigger than the actual LED size it will be easy job to do... and literally it is...check out the final result here...

I had FEW imperfection solders and I have wasted just 3 LEDs, I just snap it off the LED's heads by my tweezer, maybe i did forced it... now I can solder QFN package with BIG CONFIDENT...

Ok, what now? is it working? wait until next post... image

Good idea. Pre tinning the copper gives you just enough solder to connect to the surface mounted components. DAB
