Help us select RoadTest kits

Hi,

We'd like to hear your thoughts on dev kits in the market just now. What  kits interest you, or would you maybe like to see on future RoadTests?  Are there any other type of products you'd like to see on RoadTest?  (before anyone suggests, there's no chance of an iPad appearing in the  near term future image )

To get the conversation started we've pasted 9 possible kits below. Tell  us which of these interest you the most and why? As a disclaimer, I'm  not promising to give away the most popular, but we'll certainly talk to  the manufacturers and your views will help us greatly!

1. National Semiconductor’s LM26420 evaluation board demonstrates the  company's LM26420 based solution.

2. International Rectifier's IRS2540 IRS2540/1 buck converter based  development board helps develop HB-LED applications

3. ST's STM3210E-SK/HT helps start development for the company's ARM  core-based microcontrollers.

4. Maxim's MAX9830A evaluation kit uses a filterless class D amplifier to  drive a mono bridge-tied-load speaker.

5. Matrix Multimedia's EB018 E-blocks CAN bus board allows investigation  of the CAN bus protocol.

6. Avago's HFBR-0410HFBR-0410 fiber optics evaluation kit allows first hand  experience with simple DC to 5MBd TTL compatible components.

7. Freescale's RD1986MMA2260DRD1986MMA2260D TRIAX 3-axis acceleration sensing demo  board combines demos available for accelerometer applications.

8. Microchip’s DM183026 mTouch capacitive evaluation kit helps develop  touch sense applications using PIC16F or PIC24F MCUs.

9. Innovate Software Solutions Hawkboard is an open community board with a  feature set based on the TI OMAP L138 processor.

I'd like to try, the 3. ST's STM3210E-SK/HT as I'd like to start using ARM Cortex devices (My current Favourite is Atmels AVR) as some of my work requires a bit more oomph.(Though I do enjoy squeezing the AVR's and it has definately improved my programming skills!)

I'd Ilso like to try the, Maxim's MAX9830.

    Dan.

in order of what I'd most love to play with:

option 3. ST's STM3210E-SK/HT - really keen to get my hands on an arm based dev kit.

    option 7. Freescale's RD1986MMA2260DRD1986MMA2260D - accelerometers are always fun!

option 8. Microchip’s DM183026 - as would be capacitive touch sensors!

option 4. Maxim's MAX9830A - class D  amp that works with no filtering sounds really interesting to  play with.

    thanks,

    julian

An interesting selection there! Predictably, I would go with the herd. The smaller products (Class D amp for example) I can hack together quickly and cheaply anyway, the more complex / delicate systems are way too much hassle to mock up a 1-off just to see if it will work, so I nominate:

    3.  ST's STM3210E-SK/HT helps start development for the company's ARM   core-based microcontrollers.

    9. Innovate Software  Solutions Hawkboard is an open community board with a  feature set based  on the TI OMAP L138 processor.

Last year I had a customer come to me with a product design that fitted the Beagleboard Hawkboard pretty closely. It would be interesting to see if I could resurrect it. Who knows! Difficult times out here for pitching new products without having at least a prototype to show.

I would also like to add my weight to the suggestion of a relatively simple FPGA board, maybe one of those with a DIP40 header. Not especially for my use, but because I think it will help many of the technicians and engineers out there get into a product area that is likely to be even bigger business in the not too distant future. They are very difficult to get into at a simple level, yet most engineers only need something fairly basic to use, rather than an all-singing all-dancing box which has so much to offer that it gets in the way of actually using the FPGA. Being greedy, a Xilinx eval board would be top of the list, but there are many 3rd party manufacturers who produce FPGA kits.

More personally, I would like to see Analog Devices boards, particularly DDS and ADC/DAC. The lower end DDSes are very easy to develop with, but the faster gear, and the faster/wider ADC/DACs are very demanding  and need professional dev boards.

    Mike

    Hi Alistair,

I am currently playing with an Mbed which is great fun but would realy like to try out the following.

    9. Innovate Software Solutions Hawkboard is an open community board with a  feature set based on the TI OMAP L138 processor.

Jus had a quick browse of thier site and have to say wow can see lots of posibilities with this.

    8. Microchip’s DM183026 mTouch capacitive  evaluation kit helps develop  touch sense applications using PIC16F or  PIC24F MCUs.

From a work perspective I can see this being very useful (trainiee clinical technologist) intrigued by possible work applications I could apply it to.

Think site and people on it are great.

Found lots of useful info already.

    Here are my votes:

    3.  ST's STM3210E-SK/HT helps start development for the company's ARM   core-based microcontrollers.

I have played around with the STM32 Primer2 before and would like to see how different this is.

    5. Matrix Multimedia's EB018 E-blocks CAN bus board  allows investigation  of the CAN bus protocol.

Always eager to learn about more protocols

    7. Freescale's  RD1986MMA2260DRD1986MMA2260D TRIAX 3-axis acceleration sensing demo  board combines  demos available for accelerometer applications.

    Accelerometers! Need I say more?

    8. Microchip’s  DM183026 mTouch capacitive evaluation kit helps develop  touch sense  applications using PIC16F or PIC24F MCUs.

Should be fun to experiment with!

    9. Innovate Software  Solutions Hawkboard is an open community board with a  feature set based  on the TI OMAP L138 processor.

Looks similar to the Beagleboard and full of potential!

    Regards,
    Michael

I'm doing a sensor network for racing cars, so, this would be very interesting for the development of the work.

I think that STM3210E-SK/HT in this  moments for me the most interesting, since I am currently in the  process of searching ARM processors for our projects. Now we are using  ARM -  LPC1700/LPC1300 and non-ARM - AVR32, it would be interesting to try ST32

Думаю, что STM3210E-SK/HT в данный момен для меня наиболее интересен, так как в данный момент я в процессе поиска ARM процессоров для своих проектов. На сегоднящний день используем LPC1700/LPC1300 интересно было бы попробовать и ST32
