Always a problem on relatively open forums. They can ban accounts, but the spammers will just keep signing up on new accounts. Usually on forums the first 10 posts are moderated until the account can be trusted. I believe E14 uses custom forum software, so I'm not sure that facility is available.
The forum is Jive based.
element14 were meant to be putting mechanisms in place but its very silent.
We have suggested limits and other systems to try to either restrict or limit the spammers, but it seems using the members as reporters works.
They have become clever and used the status message to provide it, and you can't report it.
They are also clever an know when element14 aren't 'on duty' and tend to hit then.
Having zero point members able to sign and enter Road Tests is not the best way to build a community IMO.
Mark
Agree, and that is a whole other topic, establish a standing within the community slowly earning the ability to enter for better and better road tests would be nice, but many of the more expensive road test entries are evaluated by the manufacturers, not E14 and they may not even look to the community standing ?, I don't know exactly how it works but based on the assignment of the last oscilloscopes it looks that way
I disagree.
I believe that element14 should be verifying the account before allowing them to post multiple entries.
You could allow a single discussion entry, that requires verification by email, before it gets published.
Once they have established the account (and element14 has a valid email) then the next 10 posts are moderated.
If they show that they are genuine then they should have full access to the site.
Most new people arriving either can't or don't check if their burning question has been covered before, so this encourages them to look first.
It also allows a new person to pose the question that may have brought them here, verifies the email address, otherwise its never seen.
It's not a large price to pay to belong to the community, and will rid us of the plague that is currently occurring.
Mark
Hey Mark,
I was kidding of course. The problem with what you're suggesting is that it might add more resistance than the average user is willing to break through, while spam bots can easily check e-mail and click links if they have to.
Usually spam is delivered via spam bot (script), so captcha is the only reliable way to keep them at bay. Could even be used as you said, only for new accounts until they get to a specific level and a number of days have passed.

Most of the folks that are here are level 1. That in itself is not a problem. We all started at 1.
The problem is that only a few continue on and use the site for information, parts and in some cases comedy relief. The rest are only here for the RoadTest free stuff and never advance or use the site for anything else. And finally you have the Spammers that troll boards and sites looking for traffic and an easy way in. I'm not just pulling this out of a hat. The figures concerning member status are available.
With this in mind jumping through a few hoops would be more than appropriate and accepted.

Hello All,
Again we do apologize for this, and we are working on this to get it resolved as quickly as possible. We should have a pretty good handle on these spammers starting with tomorrow's release and finishing up in the next release. In the meantime if you happen to see Spam please report it to moderation so we can delete the content of the user.
Thank you for your patience,
Jamie
Its not just the last Road Test, if you look back its a good few of them. Also if you look you will see that a large number of uncompleted Road Tests are by < level 3. As for manufactures choosing Element14 could outline who they can choose ie only choose proven members and ones that have not had the a similar product before (last road test had a guy who one a scope already).
As a side note there are still no posts from that road test...
