Exist any cheap option to be able to detect and recognize in a range of 10 Cm?

Hi guys,

I want to detect my cats and recognize them so I test first with the RC522 RFID LF reader but the range is so small that I couldn´t detect my cats when the tag is not on the right position or when they eat in a different angle

I'm looking for a different option to replace this option but the prices rise a lot. I'm considering the possibility of using an antenna DIY (this test didn´t work, unfortunately), or buy one but is so expensive.

I'm considering different technologies as NFC (Near field Communication) and Proximity Beacons

Do you guys have any suggestion for me?

I'm looking for an option around 5Us.

Thank you so much for your help

Hi Mauro, it would help to know more details: As John says, do you need to distinguish multiple cats? Do you want to sense cats (or dogs) that don’t have tags Is there a maximum range - e.g. exclude cats…

Use capacitive sensing. I recommend the TI Capsense board. DAB

    Hi Frank,

First of all sorry for delay answering,

I want to detect different cats so I could give each one different portion of food.
Yes, I want to use tags with an RFID reader + an antenna, my budget for it would be 20 USD because I want to be able to sell the product if the testing will be successful.
I have a big advance in the mechanical part of the design but not so much in the electronic part yet.
I would prefer that the range detection will be below of 40 Cm because it will be a little bit annoying if the feeder is continually open and close when the cat doesn't want to eat but for some reason id close to the feeder.

Thank you so much for answering me Frank.

You can make your own antenna from a coil of wire - something like RFIDCOIL-250A works up to 27 cm:

You can make your own reader card using something like an EM4095 chip.
