ROADTEST POLL-- Which of These Boards Would You Likely Decide to Roadtest?

Here are a few more boards that I would like to get your feedback on whether element145 should offer them as roadtests. If you have a bit of time, I'd appreciate your vote.

I got one of these Cytron boards (Maker Pi Pico) and it's pretty convenient mainly as a breakout ... it's also very reasonably priced: https://www.cytron.io/p-maker-pi-pico Never tried the one on this…

Cytron looks like an interesting board but I will admit I've always wanted to try out a Jetson nano

I'm rather curious to know why you think the Maaxboard is redundant. Personally, I quite like the NXP i.MX 8M Processor with Arm Cortex-A53 and the Cortex-M4F cores onboard. IMHO, this is nicely positioned for Industrial Edge devices. I believe this is same processor used in the Arduino Portenta X8, for example. At the moment I am pondering whether to get a Portenta X8 or go for the original Portenta H7. Still, one aspect to review is degree of flexibility you have with your Linux install (assuming you use something like yocto).

The Nano Every is also a curious one and probably worth road testing, only to demonstrate if it still has value in it's target market. The form factor is liked, but the price makes it a hard sell compared to say Raspberry Pi Pico boards. Anyway there are not many SAMD11 M0+ processor boards around, so it may be a case of benchmarking against other similar M0 boards (e.g. RP2040).

The Jetson Nano's main USP is the processing cores that form its CUDA capability, ideal for things like AI or anywhere lots of data needs to be processed in parallel. As a Pi replacement it wouldn't be very good, since the CUDA cores would go unused. It's about the cheapest way to get that capability (many PCs may have graphics cards that support it too). Possibly the Maaxboard could be a closer fit to a Raspberry Pi (since the Pi is out of stock in a lot of places currently) but I've not looked at the Maaxboard details.

I like the Seeed cases they use... they fit both the Jetson Nano, and also the Raspberry Pi. I've been meaning to create a little LED strip for the Raspberry Pi enclosure, so that the LED flashes whenever there's a radio event (the Pi has a LoRaWAN card installed).

    Interesting choices.

My programming skills are not up for the Jetson, though it does look enticing.

The Cytron board is definitely interesting, I might have to pick one up and play with it.

For me, the most interesting device is the  Jetson Nano. I've been researching it and was hoping you would offer it as a Roadtest.  Next, It would be the AVNET Maaxboard. I have a a few NXP evaluation kits and my experience with the embedded development environment was very positive.  Exciting devices on the RoadTest horizon.

I meant redundant just for me, not in general. I don't have a use-case to take advantage of the extra power and capabilities it has. Maybe if I got deeper into AI and ML it will rise to the top of my list. For right now, it's not worth the effort for me to change what is working.

Similarly for the Nano Every, I already have enough other options to keep busy, and there aren't any special features in the Every that tip the scale to where it's worth the time investment to sign up for a RoadTest for it.

To be clear - those are all excellent RoadTest options, especially for people who have applications in mind that take advantage of their strengths. Right now I think other people will be able to provide far more value than I could.

It could definitely be used as a linux server. The os installation is debian based and can run python. It’s not a perfect RPi replacement for HATs, not all gpio pins work exactly the same as on the pi. You do get i2c and SPI though.

    • For me the most interesting device would be the Seeed Studio Jetson Nano.  I would like to try something like a home security with some other features for others that do not belong.
