Seeking Feedback on Roadtesting a Power Management IC with 5 other functions and code free configuration app

nPM1300 EKWe were talking to a sponsor about roadtesting its Power Management IC eval board.  While we have other roadtested other PMICs, this one has some unique features I think are worth looking into. I listened to a webinar on the product and it includes a lot:

  • Charger IC
  • 2 Buck DC/DC converters
  • 2 Load Switches
  • Fuel Gauge
  • External watchdog
  • Hard Reset IC

That's all on one chip!

Let me tell you about it. I'd appreciate your feedback and your vote in the prospective roadtester poll. Thanks.

nPM1300 EK block diagramWhat is the nPM1300 Evaluation Kit?

It's based on the nPM1300 is an integrated Power Management IC (PMIC) with advanced system management features. It has two highly efficient DC/DC buck regulators with configurable dual-mode output. It supports charging of lithium-ion, lithium-polymer, and lithium iron phosphate batteries at up to 800 mA through USB-C. Up to 600 mA of total regulated power can be supplied from two 200 mA BUCK regulators and two 50 mA LDOs to external components. The LDOs are configurable as load switches and can switch loads of up to 100 mA each.

What are some of the nPM1300's other features?

  • System-level watchdog
  • Intelligent power-loss warning
  • Ship and Hibernate modes for increased battery life
  • 5 GPIOs and 3 LED drivers
  • Fuel gauge when paired with an nRF52 or nRF53 Series host device
  • Battery connectors that support Negative Temperature Coefficient (NTC) connection for battery temperature monitoring
  • Easy access to PMIC voltage outputs through male pin headers and scope probe loops
  • Plug-and-play connection to nPM PowerUP, a computer app that enables quick evaluation and implementation of Nordic PMICs
  • Evaluate without writing any code or performing any device programming, when used with nPM PowerUP

To get the best performance fuel gauge it's recommended to profile the battery at different temperatures representing the design's temperature range. Maxim recommends this for the MAX20303 as well. This…

On paper it looks like a fine chip offering some useful features - I shall consider it for future designs. Its the kind of part that will always be used as part of a larger system - so ideally it needs…

I agree that it is very intereseting device which can significantly reduce the BOM. But it is not totaly unique. For example, MAX20303 can do almost the same and it is available since about 2017. In my opinion nPM1300 is direct competitor to the MAX20303 and the price will decide the "battle".

Nordic PMIC offers configuring via PC software, is it possible to do the same with Analog PMIC?

Yes, it is. Both chips are configured using I2C interface. Analog (Maxim Integrated) is know for his hilarious PC software for evaluation kits and MAX20303 is no exception.

I do not have evaluation kit at home, but in Datasheet I found screenshot:
