Introducing OFF THE BENCH RoadTests - What Products Do You Prefer to Test?

rscasny
rscasny over 1 year ago

About a month ago, I introduced an idea I call "Off The Bench" Roadtests.

Basically, I would reserve a few roadtest slots per year for products that aren't primarily used on your electronics workbench. It's a fairly simple idea.

In this discussion/poll, I wanted to drill down to more specific products, based on the feedback I had previously received from you.

I have a series of polls below, grouped by product types, more or less. I offer two products and the option to suggest an entirely different product in the comments section.

I will take your voting back to our product management, and I could start lining up "off the bench" products in the coming year.

So, if you have the time, vote as little or as much as you have time for.

Thank you in Advance.

I would like to add some storage containers like the units which you use when shipping Experimenting with ... components. Farnell/newark have plenty of these storage boxes but documentation is very brief…

Regarding the vacuum / duster. I know it is more expensive, but I have a Datavac Pro. It's both. I think it would be a better option for a test since it is dual-function. (I'm biased on this one since…

In the heat gun category, I would really like to see a hot plate road test. Newark sells a number of them. They have several uses but few people actually have one because they can be pretty expensive.…

wire strippers. There I said it. I used three different models, each one at a different site. Shabaz comment about left and right reminded me that one site actually has a left and right handed wire stripper. What make a good wire stripper. My curious mind wants to know.

Funny I didn't see it in the list of tools for the above kits.

I confess I am lazy and tend to manipulate side cutters to strip the insulation when I should go find the proper tool. That is the kicker, the go find part. I think of my technique as I recall videos of people assembling the space shuttle. You really do hope they stripped the wire correctly in that installation.

I'd be interested in hearing what wire-strippers people recommend for single-core wire used for breadboards.

For calipers I wish someone would create a web app (I think it's possible with JavaScript) that would display video of the front camera on mobile phones, mirrored. Then right-handed calipers would be more usable for left-handed people although it would still be inconvenient to have the mobile there for every measurement! : ) I would give it a go but it's finding time.. Hm, or maybe bluetooth calipers although probably it's just cheaper to find plain left-handed calipers and be done with it.

Now that is a method I haven't used since college. Well actually when I started paying for my own dental.

I'll admit it.  I still use my teeth sometimes.  I do it less than when I was younger.  Back in the PSTN days, I got bit a few times "stripping wire" when a call came in.  THAT tingles quite a bit.  AND it caused me to buy a real set of wire strippers.

Depending on quantity: Ideal T stripper, Paladin Mini-Stripax Plus, Eraser C100S or one of the Schleuniger models.
