The RoadTester Poll: What Kind of Engineer Are You?

The element14 community is made up of a diverse collection of people, including engineers, students makers, researchers, academics, and many more. I believe the element14 community team conducted a survey several years ago that supports this statement. But I would like to get a clearer idea on how our engineers break out into specialties. So, I've create this poll. My motivation is to better understand the broad category of the specialties of our RoadTest Group, as well as the people who follow the group in order to help me work with our sponsors better when we are planning RoadTests.

How to participate in the poll: From the selections below, select the broad category that describes your current job or professional role. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Randall Scasny

RoadTest Program Manager

Hi Randall, I'm a bag of all sorts really, Software developer, systems engineer, electronics engineer, I work in a consulting division of a company and get involved with many different types of projects…

I have worked both software and hardware phsaing in and out. Right now I am many hats due to the small staff we have. Z/OS and Z9 is current (Ha ha) work.

Well, My list is long....which is why I picked the multiple selection.

Ready.....Welder, Fitter, Electrician, Plumber, Gas engineer, Gas mixing Engineer, Un-vented hot water engineer, Electronics service engineer, Systems and service engineer, Vacuum service engineer, UHV specialist, Mass spectrometer specialist, physicist, Design engineer (Mechanical & Electronic), Programming engineer (Embedded systems), and most recent is development engineer which I am moving into. I also do teaching on UHV systems and their use world wide.

I do like to buy development boards to tinker with while I'm bored, the problem I find now is that I constantly look at things and think....I know everything about it.... now how can I make it better or what can I adapt this to - to make a good project.

I am constantly looking for a challenge and my latest challenge will be FPGA's and more on embedded test equipment design. image

This feels more like an exam question on a philosophy paper!

I am a professional engineer in an automotive mechatronics team, but I don't own or design any hardware. I work largely on software application in field, does that bit of code work in the vehicle, do I need to change any settings to get the performance needed.

    Straight forward.

Except, as soon as something with the hardware doesn't work, I have to fault find it! Bad connections, EMF, mechanical interactions, issues with protocols and syntax, hardware implementation that doesn't meet recognised standards, just in the last 2 years.

Then there is the upfront proof of concept stuff. Some other guy says "we can sell function 'x' if we add hardware 'y', anyone know how to add hardware 'y' to prove it?", Often it's me bodging systems together. Then the design, real base level design, FMA, FMEA. Suddenly I need to know a lot of stuff about things I had no idea about.

That's actually one of the more interesting elements of the RoadTest, how other people are applying the unit under test to their projects.

Yes - I also was one of the "Multiple Role Engineers" in the lot.  Generally an Electronic Design Engineer.  More recently Systems Engineer with a bit of Software Engineering and Firmware Engineering thrown in.  Since I also do much of my own Mechanical Engineering that also.  One of my most recent projects would have me consider checking the Automation Engineer selection as my most recent design is for a PLC that will run on BASIC instead of ladder logic.

Not actually an engineer, more of a curious tinkerer on the electronics side of things. Professionally I am a STEM teacher for 6-13year olds. I also have half a bachelors degree in computer science. So, I dont really fit into the categories.
