The RoadTester Poll: What Kind of Engineer Are You?

The element14 community is made up of a diverse collection of people, including engineers, students makers, researchers, academics, and many more. I believe the element14 community team conducted a survey several years ago that supports this statement. But I would like to get a clearer idea on how our engineers break out into specialties. So, I've create this poll. My motivation is to better understand the broad category of the specialties of our RoadTest Group, as well as the people who follow the group in order to help me work with our sponsors better when we are planning RoadTests.

How to participate in the poll: From the selections below, select the broad category that describes your current job or professional role. Thanks.

Sincerely,

Randall Scasny

Hi Randall, I'm a bag of all sorts really, Software developer, systems engineer, electronics engineer, I work in a consulting division of a company and get involved with many different types of projects…

    My thoughts:

    1) select multiple role engineer and explain in the comments, which you have, or

    2) select systems engineer; or

    3) select engineering management, which I have just added.

Difficult to choose, started off as an electronic engineer but have been moved into a systems engineering management role.

Unfortunately I can't participate in this poll, I am not a professional engineer. I am a hobby engineer with a fair bit of experience. If I were to chose one it would be a software engineer. I have created software for cnc machines and tracking software. Great poll to see where the communities experience lays.

If I had known then what I know now, I probably would have added the new options from the beginning.

I've learned a lot about the roadtesters just being doing this poll. So, I think it's been very useful information.

    Appreciate everyone's input.

Now that new options have been added it would be great to be able to change/update my choice to multiple choices or at least something slightly different possibly

I should have done this sooner. But I added "multiple role engineer"

Need a box saying all of the above, or "Jack of all trades". I started off in electronics and firmware, but now regularly do mechanical and 3D CAD design.

I think it's a small company thing where you get stuck in with everything you need to.  Last week I also fixed a tap in the works kitchen!

How is an engineer like a regulator?

They both control voltage by design. image

As another data point, I could check every box in the poll except maybe educator, although I did work for a university for 10 years.

Good point. I'm going to have to rethink how I do a poll of this type in the future.

But I am still getting some useful information.

    Thanks for participating.
