Some other roadtest is on my hands, there is why I can not allow time for this product. Still, I shall propose my idea that my be helpful for other candidate.
Renesas 65XN Envision Kit is great as Renesas is good at it, since I have some vendor-supplied evaluation kits from Renesas.
If you really want to use it in your product, that is always good choice with balanced prcie and performance. But if you just want to play with it or try some basic idea, I would suggest skip it. Renesas has independant Software system that you have to try very hard to familiar with it.
RX microcontrollers with RXv2 core is not popular ARM-core, that is why Renesas can fully handle their royalty fee and software upgrade. That means you shall be take more time even very good at STM32F7xxx series.
Well, you might apply for the road test because you wanted a free board (nothing wrong with that at all), or it might be because you were interested in the chip.
But why would you be interested in the chip ?
It's a slow (only 120MHz) Renesas special (ie not and ARM or a RSC V5 or other widely used core) with no stand out features.
It might be really good value for money in large production quantities - but if you are into that you won't be getting your eval boards via road tests.
If (like me) you design stuff for a living and it gets made mainly in medium to small quantities the price of the chip is much less important than the cost of using it -
which is why it's chip families that appeal - like ST's STM32xxxx with hundreds of similar and related parts to choose from, and the ARM ecosystem to lean on.
Dev boards, however cheap, don't drive the decision.
I suppose it's rather normal that many RoadTests feature products which are rather niche and perhaps only appeal to a certain audience of experts and members. Likewise, it's really up to them to decide whether they are interested, have the time/expertise and are willing to make the investment to put in an application. I guess those that are interested will put in an application "before the deadline".
Unfortunately, in this case, I don't think it is a product that is quite aimed at me and I don't think I would do a good job of demonstrating it, so I think I will pass.
Still up in the air on this one I am still playing with my stm disco board the STM32F769I which has been fun and quite the learning process so far but enjoyable. Looking at the features and specs of it and comparing the features of other, well similar kits but with that being said the documentation on the renesas site is well listed and well documented for the board and would make for a quick setup. To me tho it just doesn't have anything that pops out at me that really says "play with me" on it.
it would be interesting to compare it in physical form but ya the reserves are still there on applying as much as it is fun to play with new toys I am still on the fence.
with that all being said I think its my bed time lol
