Because a 3d printer is an additive process you can do more complex shapes with it than with a cnc router. Cnc routers struggle with overhang and other complex shape where is a 3d can make these relatively easily by using support structures.

a cnc router can do everything a laser or 3D printer can do but depends on how deep your pockets are. its very easy to convert a cnc router to a laser or have a laser add on for a router or 3D printer. you can get other types of laser other than tube or diodes

I am doing a conversion from router to laser its very easy to do, you just need to know how they work

Although a DIY for a 3D printer would cost just as much as a cheap already made 3D Printer if you didn't have access to the parts already, I chose this option because I believe a 3D printer has a infinite amount of possibilities attached to it. Imagination is the limit.

if your buying a kit then you can do the same for either

I'd do a 3d printer because I think they are more easy to build. I would like a CNC router but if I made it then it would fall apart, catch fire, melt and explode.

A CNC machine would be the best to start with.  One could always make an attachment to add 3d printing capability, possibly even adding mirrors later for use with a laser cutter.

One difficulty with a laser cutter is the laser tube and power supply.  Even a low end cutter capable of cutting anything more than paper is going to cost a thousand or more just for a bare tube.

I like the way you think Steve, that would be a very interesting project.

    Greetings,

So, you build a CNC with changeable heads.

That way you can have the best from all worlds.

    The X,Y & Z is the same.

    Regards,
