3D Printed..FOOD?

Apparently Nasa thinks this is a great idea!  Check out this link for the interesting details. This reminds me of the Matrix when they eat that synthetic gruel...

"...it will use proteins, carbohydrates and sugars to create edible food products. Contractor says one of his primary motivations is a belief that food will become exponentially more expensive in the near future..Some alternative food source options that may be used with the printer include algae, duckweed, grass, lupine seeds, beet leaves and even insects..."

What you think?

From my perspective, having a 3D food printer would be very useful for remote locations. If you can create condensed food that can be assembled and printed, then you would greatly reduce the amount of…

I agree with you DAB that this would be a great device for remote locations that have limited amout of space.  You also hit it on the head about the endless variety that could be made with basic ingredients.  Just think about it.  You could dump some ingredients into the printer, it would then mix them up rehydrate if necessary and even possibly cook them before printing.  I would say it doesn't get much better than that.

I know i would be the first to try out some freshing printed food.

I'd try 3D printed food as well! Also, this conversation got me thinking - is there such a thing in this world as automated robotic chefs?  How nice would it be to use your personal Robo-chef along with attached 3D food printer to make you personalized healthy gourmet meals every day - and ready when you get home from work?   The only work you might have to do is ensure the right ingredients are in the cupboards and fridge!  The closest I have to this in my home is a crock pot! image

Great idea Nicole.image  That would be very nice to have.  I was also thinking about the restaraunt business.  Each table at the resaraunt would have an area that was compossed of a ordering/payment spot along with a printer/cooker.  The printers would all tie back to one central ingredient location.  As the clients orders their food its printed off.  Now i know this is years before this would be possible but how cool would that be.

One of the nice features of a 3D Printing "robochef" would be the ability to ensure that while every family member's plates could look the same or could be personalized to their preferences, the printed food could be adjusted to provide the perfect dietary needs of each member of the family member. Carbs/protein/etc could be varied based on biological need or planned activity level for each.
