3D Printer with large printing area?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hi, I have been looking into getting my own 3D printer for a while now. For the most part I wouldn't have a problem with most printers out there with the smaller printing area, but I have been working on some projects lately and the idea printing area would be 9" or more on the X/Y axis I don't need it very tall for the Z. Is there any kit for a printer of that size? I have looked into the ultimaker and replicator etc but are alittle to pricy for me. maybe something under $1,000. It doesnt have to be a kit either I can order seperate parts to make a custom one but im not sure exactly where to start etc. Any help is greatly appreciate.

Thanks -M3dik

    Hey Jake

I agree with you that the Ultimaker and Replicator are a little pricing but then they do come with tech support and fully calibrated ready to print.  Now if your the DIY/hands on type of guy this shouldnt be a big deal.  But If your looking for something of that build size I would go with the mendalmax 2.0  http://www.mendelmax.com/?wiki=mendelmax-versions.  If you dont like that design you can scale up any design  with a little effort.  If you go with the cartesian design i would make sure you use 80/20 extruded aluminum tubes not the old threaded rod design as these are know to flex and wobble.  You can also look at the delta type design(http://www.thingiverse.com/thing:17175) but currently isnt printing the size you are looking at.

Thank you Nate for some great info. And yes I am the DIY kind of person haha, everything I have is modded or customized in some sort of way. I'll look into the mendelmax so far it looks like what i'am looking for! Around mid August before I will have the extra to piece it all together, then I will post some follow up pics etc on how it went. Thanks again!

Not a problem Jake.  If you have any questions don't hesitate to shoot them my way.  I should be able to answer any questions you have on 3d printers.  Here is a great website richrap.com.  He has some good tips and tricks and general information.

Okay I'll be sure to ask you if i'am stuck on something haha. What program would you recommend? I see a lot of people using Pronterface, are there others? from the looks of pronterface seems to be pretty simple and straight forward.

For ease of use i would say Printrun which is a combination of printcore(G-code sender), pronsole(command line G-code sender) and pronterface(G-code sender with graphical user interface).  This is used with Skeinforge by default for slicing but I would recommond swapping it out for Slic3r. After you feel comfortable with Printrun then I would check out ReplicatorG, Repetier.  These are essentially the same but offer more options.

Alright sweet thank you. I'll download them and try them out at a friends house he has a ultimaker. Atleast let me mess with the programs until I can get mine built! haha
