3D Printer with large printing area?

Former Member
Former Member over 12 years ago

Hi, I have been looking into getting my own 3D printer for a while now. For the most part I wouldn't have a problem with most printers out there with the smaller printing area, but I have been working on some projects lately and the idea printing area would be 9" or more on the X/Y axis I don't need it very tall for the Z. Is there any kit for a printer of that size? I have looked into the ultimaker and replicator etc but are alittle to pricy for me. maybe something under $1,000. It doesnt have to be a kit either I can order seperate parts to make a custom one but im not sure exactly where to start etc. Any help is greatly appreciate.

Thanks -M3dik

I agree with Nate's comments above about the MendelMax - it's a decent kit, one of the two I used for photos in the "3D Printing for Dummies" book. Large build platform for a non-commercial design, and Richard (my co-author) has even upscaled the design using extruded 80/20 aluminum framing before. Printrun is a good driver with Slicr, but have heard some like Cura - the more the merrier!

I forgot all about Cura.  Thanks for bringing it up Kalani!  Did they ever add the function to step without having to start the print that was my biggest knock on it.
