Right now, you can get an entry-level FDM/FFF-type 3D printer from our hosting service here (Element 14) as a PrinterBot. They also sell the Cubify models, but I tend to avoid anything that requires the vendors' own proprietary cartridges instead of generic filament you can select for yourself. The PrinterBot is pretty bare bones as I understand it, but will definitely get you started in 3D printing. I started with a MakerBot, but they too have recently started requiring their filament cartridges. I also use the Mendel Max 2.0 and the Rostock Max (both kits I assembled for the book "3D Printing for Dummies") and those work well, or if you want to go the least expensive route, then any of the RepRaps would do pretty well for $300-$500 USD each. What are your needs in terns of materials (ABS/PLA work or do you need PTFE or Nylon, etc?) and what level of comfort would you expect if you have to assemble parts and electronics for yourself (that would impact your selection for the electronics, etc)?

Kirk hit it right on the head. In order to get the most for your dollar you need to determine what materials will be used and if you want to take on the build yourself(kit) or not. The printrbots are very simple to use and build and are great for getting started into 3d printing.

The Prusa i3 is a magnificent design, whether building from a kit or sourcing it yourself. Sean, make sure to post some photos as you go along!
