Best way to explain the RepRap Project?

fustini

I was chatting with a friend about 3D printers who had not heard of RepRap before.  It struck me that many folks being introduced to desktop 3D printing through some manufacturers may not have any understanding of the importance the RepRap project & community played.  I'm coming of with a list of resources to introduce someone to RepRap and would appreciate any suggestions to what I have so far:

RepRap Project - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

  • RepRap project is an initiative to develop a 3D printer that can print most of its own components.
  • RepRap was founded in 2005 by Dr Adrian Bowyer, a Senior Lecturer in mechanical engineering at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom.

RepRap.org Community Wiki

  • RepRap is about making self-replicating machines,
  • Reprap.org is a community project
  • RepRap was the first of the low-cost 3D printers
  • RepRap Project started the open-source 3D printer revolution
  • RepRap is the most widely-used 3D printer technology among the Maker Community

Good video embedded on RepRap.org:

I simply love what the RepRap concept has evolved into - the sheer variety of expressions along the original Cartesian layout, the delightfully busy Delta variations and their inverse-Delta configurations…

A good video, Drew. The RepRap has become almost a "masterwork" for Makers to demonstrate their relative skills, as was appropriate in olden times for guildsmen to demonstrate their craft and be declared a Master <blacksmith, cooper, etc> as was their particular trade.

Every makerspace I visit always has its own variation of the RepRap under construction or in use, just the same as they all seem to have at least one variation of a MAME cabinet from the last generation of Makers.

I recently visited the Tx/Rx Hackerspace in Houston, TX, where I saw several RepRap projects underway like this delta-style printer. They have built their own series of electronics, integrating an Arduino, RAMPS and Pololu stepper controllers into a triangular form factor meant for delta purposes. This is a good example of the "showing off your skills" level of development in the RepRap design arena.

The next level up is the design of your own 3D printer itself, like the magnificent Morgan Polar-style RepRap built by Quentin Harley in South Africa (RepRAP Morgan | A journey towards personal Rapid Prototypinghttp://richrap.blogspot.com/). That demonstrates the next level of masterwork evolving today in makerspaces around the world.

The RapRap Morgan is very interesting design.

I like the Wally and the Simpson too:

It's great to see the RepRap community continue to innovate.

I simply love what the RepRap concept has evolved into - the sheer variety of expressions along the original Cartesian layout, the delightfully busy Delta variations and their inverse-Delta configurations, plus the excellent Polar variations that are starting to come forth. My origins in Mechanical Engineering many moon ago exult in the variety of transformations possible even in just this minimal way around additive manufacturing. I look forward eagerly to see what will come as more of the fundamental designs fall from IP protection into the public arena. First, it was SLA then FDM/FFF which allowed RepRap to come into existence, now SLS has recently passed its patent period with more opportunities ahead!
