New board, bad smell.

fuzion_reaktor

I just recently got a new 3d printer board off of ebay real cheap ($35) and when I opened the package I was bombarded by a smell somewhere between recently melted plastic and boiling acetone. Is this normal? it had been sealed in a static proof package for a while and the smell dissipated after a few minutes. I've always been somewhat sensitive to chemical smells, but this was enough to make me leave the room for a while. is this dangerous, or just benign 'new pcb' smell?

Update, I recently got stepper motor drivers that smell like cherry pepsi....it's kinda neat.

That's a good idea, I tend to forget mine for hours sometimes. For some reason my soldering iron only works on maximum wattage and the tips oxidize in seconds of warming up regardless of if I tin them…

My son went to the dermatologist with a splotchy melanin patch.  The Dr. asked him if they were longevous in his family.  He responded affirmatively.  The doctor sent him home there and then.

I do wonder about this.  The positive health effect I associate with e- is that it makes my life more interesting.  My father thinks wanting to live is a major factor in health.  Really, IDK, but it makes some sense.

I ponder the fate of one of electronic's greatest heroes, Michael Faraday, who went on to explore the halogens with the predictable, horrid impact on his health:

Cool. All my attempts at using perfboard for circuits smells very strongly of burning.

I have the same problem. Mostly because my soldering iron burns everything.

I just suck at soldering. it doesn't help that I occasionally leave the iron on overnight. I have had to implement a timer so it turns off after 20 minutes.

2 days was my record. My iron does not even have temperature control, and it oxidises a lot as well. How do you clean your iron? You may be wearing down the tip and causing it to oxidise.

Mine does more of a thing along the lines of oxidizing in 30 seconds of being cleaned or first opened despite tinning the tip (literally I watched it oxidize and the solder stop sticking well when I first opened it). When soldering I have to look for places where the solder still sticks to it. To clean it I use sandpaper but I've been looking for other methods online. I want to try maybe using some sort of rust dissolving chemical if I can find one that wouldn't destroy the tip. I'm going to get a new iron soon though, since the temperature control really only sets to really low, or melt my board high.

Oh no not the sandpaper technique! I used to use this technique before reading about it on the forums. Turns out there is a thin layer of resistant metal on the outside that can easily be removed by sanding. If you have completely worn through then you may have no other choice but to keep sanding, but PLEASE do not do this to your new iron. Tin the tip and clean with a sponge. I think brass shavings are also available for a slightly better clean.

OH, I know about the sandpaper, but the resistant metal on my tips is far from being resistant. Literally I have had to remove it to get to metal that can at least work for a little bit. I will be getting better tips soon, or at least a bunch in bulk. Never buy a nexxtech iron though, they are junk.

Thankfully I was given an Antex iron. If you can, look for a silicone lead. It is more flexible for greater control when soldering.
