3d printing problems

I am new to 3d printing and have been having some problems. I borrowed a Makerbot replicator 2 from a friend and was not able to get a single successful print out of it. It would get a few layers into the print, then a clicking sound would start and then it would stop extruding. If I removed the filament and started the print again, it would extrude for a few layers and then stop printing. I recently purchased a printrbot play. I was able to get a few small prints out of it, then suddenly, the same exact problem that happened with the makerbot started with the Printrbot. When I looked at the drive gear, there was not a speck of filament. Is this problem arising from something that I am doing, or is it something else.

    Hi Luke,

    My printer (Cel Robox) has a similar issue which seems to be related to the temperature of the drive gear. I have heard ABS is not so susceptible, but I use PLA and it seems the filament is barely strong enough to be pushed by the drive gear, so if it gets to warm and softens a bit, it cogs or slips or clicks. Once the filament is "stripped" it cannot self-correct and the damaged section needs to be removed. Fortunately, my printer allows me to retract the filament, cut off the damaged section, allow the gear to cool off, and then reload and continue printing. At some point I plan to add extra cooling to the gear or heat shielding and see if it improves. It might also be useful to ensure the PLA is pressed against the gear with adequate force.
