5v arduino regulator friend after installing jumper caps

right after I set up the jumper caps under each motor driver and the extra fifth place for a motor driver, although I do not have a fifth motor (I am confident i put them in the right way), i fried the 5v regulator in the Arduino mega 2560 after connecting the 12V power supply, and i think it also ruined the RAMPS board. I think this because I purchased a new Arduino, downloaded the firmware, and after connecting it to the RAMPS board, it wont turn on. I think this is because i tried calibrating the voltage of each motor driver (via the trimpot) before putting on the jumper caps. Could that have been the reason that the 5v regulator burned? Thank you again for your help.

    Hi Jake,

    It is impossible to pin point the cause of your failure from the information that you supplied. I will tell you that the regulator would not have failed unless some how there was too much load placed on the power supply of the Arduino. The Arduino is not designed to power periferal equipment like motors. They must be driven with larger current devices. If you were in fact using a driver circuit then I would look for a wiring problem where the output of the Arduino's regulator is being tied to ground or into another high current sink. The failure of the second board is not likely caused directly by the Arduino but more likely by the 12 volt power supply. If you haven't already pulled the circuit apart it would be a good exercise to draw the circuit from your prototype and then go back and compare your diagram to the original that you constructed from. I have used this technique to find my mistakes in the past. You may want to show us the diagram so we can further speculate on the cause of the problem and we can all learn together what not to do.
