Ramps stepstick help

Former Member
Former Member over 9 years ago

Dear all

I am currently building a delta 3d printer and have encountered some issues with ramps and my stepsticks. I am testing the ramps1.4 without any motors attached or stepsticks and it works totally fine no problems. If I insert one stepstick it is also fine but as soon as I install 2 next to each other the arduino and ramps turn off (no status leds nothing). I was wondering if any of u have had the same problem or maybe be able to help.

Info on what I have

1 Robotale Ramps1.4 board with d1 removed

5 Pololu A4988 stepstick chinese clones with heatsinks installed

1 sainsmart Arduino mega 2560

1 Reprap full graphic smart lcd

Any help or suggestions would be apperciated.

On a RAMPS1.4 board I have the stepper drivers  are very close together and  were touching each other when installed, you may have the same problem.

I put a small piece of kapton tape between them to make sure nothing was shorting out.

If you purchased the cheaper knockoffs, then ever 1 out of every 5 stepsticks are faulty. (I think they intentionally send them out to get rid of them and hope you don't feel the need to send it back since it was so cheap.) Check every one, one at a time. I've purchased 2 sets with the same results. And then one of the Arduino Mega 2560's failed. Looking at the reputation of those, I'd either spend the equivalent of a quality board for many of the cheap ones (just for spares) or just purchase a quality original.

Do u know if there's any way to hook the step sticks up induvidually or test to see whether it's the ramps board or the step sticks that are causing the problem
