printing thoughts

i recently got involved in 3D printing, like most things i tend to leap before looking in depth. Soooooo...now i have a printer and i need to make changes just to get it up and running.   first off i will say that i hope to use this ney piece of equipment to further my ideas for a "hydrogen engine" i have been working on for many years now, and have yet to complete first proto type. i know what it will look like but getting thoughts into the real world is my bigest challenge..any and all help appreciated...thank you for reading...Chris...

    Hello Chris,

We hope you are enjoying the element14 Community so far!

I will move this over to the 3D Printing area as it is a better fit.

    Thank you,

    Jamie

    Hello Chris

My first thought after reading your post is that using a FDM/FFF printer in a hydrogen engine might not be the best.  Now that assumes your using it to print the entire engine.  The current limitation of materials just would not be able to stand to pressure and friction that it would be subjected to.  Now to get a prototype to visualize how the assembly will come together then a FDM/FFF printer is a perfect choice.  The first thing that would need to happen is get the parts into 3d models.  Have you every worked with 3d modeling software?    What issues are you having with the printer?

Thanks for the reply, printer is more for prototyping problem I am having

is with extruder. Should have looked harder at the design of what I was

buying. I bought based on price thinking I could modify anything that

wasn't good enough... I was partly right. Printer is a 3D Stuffmaker

Evolution and the extruder is junk but I like the rest. I need a

functioning extruder tried to print one but failed. Bought a wades online

and in the process of acquiring rest of parts to make it work... All that

is left is hobbed bolt then I will try again. As for software I have looked

at several open source online but haven't made a decision . I had solid

works for a while couple years back but lost it with internet... Now just

trying to put pieces back together...

I often use open source CAD systems for my K-12 educational students where the teachers don't have budget for more advanced software packages. SketchUp has a personal package that is easy to use (not entirely open source, but readily available) and AutoDesk's TinkerCAD (rudimentary, but very easy to adopt and use) can be run in the browser. OpenSCAD is also a magnificent tool if you can handled the mostly-coding aspects instead of GUI-based tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, etc.
