Extruder motor making noise but not working

victorduchateau
victorduchateau over 8 years ago

Hi,

Recently I bought a 3d Printer and everything's working fine except for the extruder motor. It makes this loud ticking sound and back and forth a bit.

I'm using a RAMPS 1.4 shield on an Arduino Mega 2560.

Thanks in advance

Victor

Yes, this problem evetualily made me park my Printrbot. They have made a $70 fix for mine, the problem some use to say was the motor needed voltage adjustment on the board, but the problem is to much torque…

If you go with a larger motor, you run into more issues since the board will not power it most likely.

You could see if you lessen the amount of torque and tension that the filament is under but it may not feed it then.

Yes, this problem evetualily made me park my Printrbot. They have made a $70 fix for mine, the problem some use to say was the motor needed voltage adjustment on the board, but the problem is to much torque for that size motor, if you can get a gear like filament feeder this may fix it, that's what Printrbot did for their issues.

You might have solved this already but I had a similar problem when setting up my printer, I went through the following:

It sounds like the motor is stalling.

Does it make the noise when there is no filament in the feeder or does it run fine? If it's still stalling it could be the current on that drive is set way too low, maybe the wiring isn't correct (Motor plug offset by one pin), or maybe you are trying to run the motor too fast.

In your Signature I see you have listed a Delta 3D printer so you are probably running a bowden tube.

Does It feed when not connected to any Bowden tube or hot end?

Can you get the filament to feed along the bowden tube without the motor stalling / Clicking? Does it stick at a certain point?

Can you heat up the hot end and push filament through by hand? (I unplugged my motor and pushed through the feeder, bowden tube and hot end to get an idea of forces and where it was sticking.)

If you are using a single drive on your ramps You could swap it for the second extruder drive (If fitted) to rule out a driver issue.

I'm running a diy XY printer with a non geared extruder and bowden tube setup. I had to increase the current output from the extruder drive on the Ramps 1.4.  However I have also had an issue with the filament not wanting to go into the hotend (E3D) so make sure the end of the filament is cut clean.

Also If I am running the printer a bit too fast (Quick infill moves usually) I sometimes get a missed step occasionally.  I can increase heater temp a little, or slow down the printer a little and it's fine.

When I first started I had  quite a few stall issues caused by feed rates being too high in my standard install of Repetier host / Cura.

    Dan.
