3D Printing and the Surf Industry

PRLog - Aug. 18, 2014 - The surf industry has accepted additive manufacturing as a method of production for the ever holy surfboard.

With surfing being a spiritual pass time, the manufacturing of surf boards is a nit picky kind of part in that. As surfers know waves and know their boards as well as they know the backs of their hands, surfing equipment is very specific in specification.

Quality is another pillar in the selection of a surf board besides the shape. If a board isn't quality, the safety of the surfer could be at risk. Therefore surf board shape workers generally use the highest quality material possible in budget, and shape the boards by hand.

With 3D printers, being able to generate the right product is almost never a problem. With precision design capability, and composition/

quality being a simple choice - additive manufacturing technology can very well logically build a quality surf board.

This has been proven with recent testing and production experimentation and surf boards are now being 3D printed for consumers to enjoy!

I personally would prefer it to be cnc routed from a single piece of material for strength.

Strength is not so much an issue as overall weight for a board, where additive manufacturing allows strength enhancements where desired by adding ribs and additional support structures where desired and leaving voids where unnecessary for rigidity. Using a product like the PolyJet style printers, you might be able to integrate additional qualities by varying material type - adding in friction bumps on the dorsal surface while increasing laminar flow by including vortex generators like a golf ball on the ventral surface, etc.

I don't think strength would be a problem, especially with the composite printing capabilities that are coming to be possible,.
