Pontiac firebird 88 board.

Question

Hi Community

I have some few q´s about a board there inside this vintage car.

My car have the digital dash

The board have a broken componet that i can´t find out what is so i have replace it:

Here it is? what is it? where can i buy a new one?

Sits there with five legs.

i want to keep the electronics alive for longer and now its starts to become old so want to replace what needed to be replaced.

can the community help me telling me the componets so i can buy new ones.

Hi Jonas,

Perhaps you might have better luck finding the whole board in a salvage yard or on a Pontiac users web site than finding just the component. This is likely a common part but it has probably been re-labeled for the automotive market with an OEM part number.

Is the part bad or just broken off? Have you considered cutting away a millimeter of the gray plastic and reattaching leads to the device? Once leads are reattached you could use epoxy to protect the new solder joints.

This is a National Semiconductor part (which has been acquired by Texas Instruments).

The package type is TO-220-5.

TI may be able to help identify it.

Most TO-220-5 parts are switching voltage regulators.

The big chip on the card probably needs 5 volts, so if you have a pinout from that chip you can trace back where the 5 volt power comes from.

This is a typical circuit for a National Semi switching regulator: (the tab is connected to pin 3 - GND)

You can check to see if the circuit around your chip matches this. In particular, look for an inductor.

Maybe as on the eevblog, in the repair forum? A title like “Help to inentify National Semiconductor 1573 TO-220-5 package” could draw attention from the grey beards that frequent the forum.
