Dai Nippon Printing has acquired land in Linwood, NC, to build a manufacturing plant that will produce battery pouches that protect lithium-ion batteries. The plant is expected to create 352 jobs at a new facility located 50 miles northeast of Charlotte in what’s known as part of America’s emerging “battery belt” springing up across the southeast.
DNP’s new facility comes on the heels of the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which was enacted in August 2022 in an effort to advance energy security and climate change countermeasures. Manufacturers of lithium-ion batteries across the globe are proactively investing in the United States in order to build a supply chain for automotive lithium-ion batteries to keep up with demand in the EV market.
To that end, DNP has leveraged a material processing system known as converting technology to develop protective battery pouches that are designed to mitigate damage to EVs and increase safety. The process involves laminating materials, including steel and resin, to provide increased protection from impacts and water vapor, which can produce hydrofluoric acid. The company plans DNP to start operating the battery pouch slitting line for automotive lithium-ion batteries in 2026.
