Depending on the major, engineers in their respective disciplines can earn an average annual salary from $61,750 to $115,500 based on a report from the University of Michigan. (Image credit: Pexels)

According to a 2017/2018 report released by the University of Michigan’s Engineering Career Resource Center (ECRC), engineers with Bachelors's and Master's Degrees within their respective disciplines garner average annual (yearly) salaries that range from $61,750 to $115,500, with robotics taking the top-dollar position. The ECRC publishes the annual report based on data and activities garnered over the past academic year to provide an overview of said data, complete with salary information. Considering the economy is running strong, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that salaries remain high in the engineering fields.

It should be noted that these numbers are the average reported, as they differ in actual salary range based on the degree and the employer, meaning the amount of money earned can be more or less. With that in mind, on the Bachelor’s end, the lowest average annual income belongs to those with Environmental Engineering degrees, taking in an average of $61,750 with a range of $57,000 to $70,000. On the highest end of the spectrum, those in Computer Science rake-in an average of $97,377 with a range of $55,000 to $162,000.

Those with Master’s degrees will find that the lowest average annual income goes to the Structural Engineering category, with an income of $63,840 at a range of $61,000 to $66,000. The highest income bracket belongs to those in Robotics, which draw’s in $115,500 on average and at a range of $80,000 to $160,000. The largest range swing in this category belongs to the Electrical and Computer Engineering fields, which can be anywhere from $48,000 to $170,000.

A February 2018 report from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics states that nearly 140,000 new engineering jobs are expected between 2016 and 2026, bringing the total of all those employed in the engineering fields to just over 1,680,000. Of course, the median annual income projected for 2016 was $91,010, but those numbers are expected to grow in next year’s report.

I like this news and trend. Though 140k new jobs over the next decade seems a bit low, it's still on the positive side.

I wish I had earned the average salary for a robotic engineer. Still I had fun.
